No one could have expected that in their first participation in the World Cup, the Vietnam U21 women's volleyball team would experience so much trouble. They had an unbelievable start by defeating strong teams, winning second place in Group A despite being considered the underdogs.
But the happy days did not last long before a storm came. The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) suddenly asked some of the U21 Vietnam athletes to undergo a test (which until now no one knows what the test was). Then they also suddenly announced that there was an ineligible and invalid athlete in the team.
So the matches of U21 Vietnam with this athlete's name were changed to 0-3 loss. From being ready to compete in the round of 16, having the opportunity to compete with the top volleyball powers such as Türkiye, Poland, China, Italy, the Vietnamese girls now have to play ranked matches from 17 to 24.
Simply put, this is the bracket for the weaker teams of the tournament. Being dropped down will certainly create a heavy psychological impact for the athletes. This is similar to a candidate with a very high high school graduation score, but suddenly being dropped from… university.
There are no words to describe the feelings of the athletes, especially when they are so young. But the game must go on, whether we like it or not.
On the bright side, the ranking round from 17 to 24 is not too bad. Before entering the competition at the U21 Women's Volleyball World Cup, the coaching staff frankly admitted that the U21 Vietnam team did not have much experience and was still immature.
Therefore, they do not set any performance targets but only require athletes to play with all their heart and determination.
From this, it can be understood that the whole team had been prepared for the situation of having to go down to the weaker teams. It was just that the victories against Indonesia, Serbia, Canada and Puerto Rico accidentally created a surge of emotions, as well as accidentally changed the original plan. Now, they are returning to what they had prepared in advance.
So, U21 Vietnam girls, let's give it our all!
Moreover, Vietnamese volleyball players do not always have the opportunity to compete in a high-class playground like this.
There is no harm in continuing to compete. Winning is fun and losing is not a cause for concern. But giving up and surrendering will certainly leave behind huge consequences.
