The Cong - Viettel Club says goodbye to coach Nguyen Duc Thang

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang is no longer the head coach of The Cong - Viettel Club after round 20 of V-League 2024 - 2025.

According to Tuoi Tre Online on April 26, The Cong - Viettel Club and Coach Nguyen Duc Thang decided not to continue their cooperation after the match with Song Lam Nghe An on April 25. Head coach Nguyen Duc Thang was the one who proactively asked to resign.

This is surprising news because The Cong - Viettel just had an important victory to end a 3-match winless streak and return to the V-League championship race. After 20 matches, the army team has 33 points, behind the 2 teams above, Nam Dinh (39 points) and Hanoi (34 points), while the tournament has 6 rounds left.

Coach Nguyen Duc Thang was born in 1976 in Hanoi, is a former player of The Cong and former player of Vietnam national team. He used to lead Saigon and Thanh Hoa clubs, and helped Saigon win the 2015 first division championship.

This strategist is widely known as the first teacher of Quang Hai and Dinh Trong in the Hanoi youth team.

Mr. Thang has led The Cong - Viettel since the beginning of 2024, helping the army team finish in 5th place in the 2023 - 2024 season.

After parting ways with coach Duc Thang, The Cong - Viettel Club is likely to invite Mr. Velizar Popov, former coach of U23 Myanmar and Thanh Hoa, to take over the hot seat. Although the chance of winning the V-League is low, the army team still has the National Cup front. The team will meet Cong An Ha Noi Club in the semi-finals.
