When she first started working at Binh Duong Kindergarten (Hoa An district, Cao Bang province), Ms. Hoang Thi Huyen Trang (born in 1987) was surprised to see that the school was lacking in both facilities and equipment.
Binh Duong School in 2009 was a school with 3 levels: kindergarten, primary school, and secondary school. Ms. Huyen Trang taught a class with 29 children, from 2 to 5 years old. “It was the first time I witnessed a school with 3 levels. For kindergarten, there was only one class but it included many ages,” she recalled.
In the new phase of Binh Duong Kindergarten, Ms. Huyen Trang always seeks out many creative lessons to diversify the lessons for the kindergarten children. She said: “Although the teaching environment is still lacking, our classroom is still warm and full of love. When the new day just begins, I just look forward to seeing the children.”
In the mountainous areas of Cao Bang , Binh Duong kindergarten struggles with many difficulties because most of the preschool children are lacking essential nutrients.
However, with her love for the profession and perseverance, teacher Huyen Trang has worked hard to nurture and help a young student win second prize in the district-level Healthy and Good Children contest.
“The school saw my determination and efforts in my teaching methods. This made me very happy. At that time, this achievement was also a springboard for me to carry out many effective initiatives for the school,” Ms. Trang shared.
Understanding that her workplace is located in an economically disadvantaged area and lacks many facilities, Ms. Huyen Trang and the school have carried out many social activities. In 2015, Ms. Trang proactively consulted with competent authorities and, together with her colleagues, mobilized parents, businesses, districts, and provinces to support the school in building yards, fences, spacious classrooms, embankments, etc.
With that effort, by 2019, Binh Duong Kindergarten was honored to win second prize in the district-level contest "Building a child-centered educational environment". In 2020, Ms. Huyen Trang was awarded a certificate of merit by the Cao Bang Department of Education and Training for her good performance in the topic "Building a child-centered kindergarten in the period 2015-2020".
Although she was born and raised in Thai Nguyen, a land with many teaching opportunities after graduation, Ms. Huyen Trang still chose Cao Bang as her place of work. Over the years, the sincere and simple hearts of the people here have kept her going, making her reluctant to leave this land.
“Because Hoa An district still has many shortages. But the affection of students and local people is always full,” said Ms. Trang.
Initiative to calculate food portions for preschool children
While working at the school, she actively advised the commune leaders and village chiefs to encourage children under 5 years old to attend preschool classes. Going to each house to encourage them was not enough, Ms. Huyen Trang also organized competitions and extracurricular activities for the children to participate in to create excitement for them when going to school.
In 2012, when Binh Duong Kindergarten first organized boarding school, Ms. Trang realized that the methods of calculating food rations for children were still inadequate: “The work of kindergarten teachers is very hard. Because they have to look after and manage children's activities, most of the teachers have little time to manage and calculate the data in the food rations. If there is just a small mistake in the data table, I have to manually re-enter it from the beginning.”
To solve the above problem, Ms. Trang conducted research and applied information technology to create an Excel table. By 2019, Ms. Trang completed the initiative and began piloting it in many kindergartens.
“Based on the difficulties in implementing boarding work, I implemented this initiative at that time with the hope that children's meals would be guaranteed and calculated according to the requirements of the Ministry of Education.
In addition, this calculation table can also be done without an internet connection and does not cost anything," Ms. Huyen Trang shared.
Ms. Trang's initiative to improve the method of calculating food rations for preschool children to improve the effectiveness of boarding school management has been highly appreciated for its effectiveness and has been applied in many preschools at the provincial level.
Stepping out of my comfort zone after more than a decade of commitment
After about 15 years working at Binh Duong Kindergarten, Ms. Huyen Trang transferred to work as principal of Be Trieu Kindergarten (Hoa An district, Cao Bang province).
Sharing the reason for this decision, Ms. Trang confided: “Binh Duong Kindergarten is not only a workplace, but also my youth and passion. I have been attached to this school since the first days of my career.
However, my desire always urged me to go beyond my comfort zone. Could I shine in a larger environment, managing a large team, and still maintain my creativity? It was these concerns that led me to this decision.”
On the day of parting, she remembered how many students clung to her and could not bear to leave her. “To me, that was the success of a teacher,” she recalled.
Sharing about her colleague, Ms. Trieu Thi Hieu said: “Ms. Hoang Thi Huyen Trang is a manager with a simple, friendly and sincere lifestyle. Ms. Trang is always the leading flag for young teachers to strive to follow and contribute to improving the quality of Be Trieu Kindergarten.”
