Opportunities for schools in suburban areas

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has just announced a list of 36 public high schools enrolling additional 10th grade students for the 2024-2025 school year. Of these, 17 schools enroll less than 50 students, 12 schools enroll from 50 to less than 100 students, and 7 schools enroll from 100 to 300 students.

According to statistics, schools with additional enrollment of more than 100 students are mostly schools in suburban areas, and have not been able to meet enrollment targets for many years.

Specifically, Phong Phu High School (Binh Chanh district, 300 targets), Nguyen Van Linh High School (District 8, 191 targets), An Nhon Tay High School (Cu Chi district, 140 targets), Nguyen Van Tang High School (Thu Duc city, 134 targets), Trung Lap High School (Cu Chi district, 123 targets), Vinh Loc B High School (Binh Chanh district, 115 targets), Long Truong High School (Thu Duc city, 102 targets).

According to the additional enrollment list, some hot, top schools in Ho Chi Minh City are recruiting dozens more students. Among them, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District, recruiting 40 students), Nguyen Du High School (District 10, recruiting 19 students), Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District, recruiting 12 students), Le Quy Don High School (District 3, recruiting 15 additional students), Saigon Practical High School (District 5, recruiting 10 students)...

According to the additional admission conditions, students who do not pass any of their admission wishes to public high schools must have entrance exam scores of 3 subjects: Math + Literature + Foreign Language + priority points (if any) greater than or equal to the standard score of the 3rd wish of the school they want to apply for admission.

Thus, to be considered for additional admission to these schools, candidates must have a score of 20.5 to 26 points in 3 subjects. This is a fairly high score, combined with the criterion of failing all 3 wishes, the above high schools will have difficulty recruiting more students.

Meanwhile, for schools in suburban areas, the third choice score is usually around 13 - 16 points. Therefore, the opportunity for these schools to recruit additional students is very high.

In the previous school year, when conducting additional enrollment, most of the city's top schools such as Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Bui Thi Xuan High School, Tay Thanh High School... were left empty-handed, unable to recruit any additional students.

On the contrary, schools such as Ngo Gia Tu High School (District 8), Phong Phu High School (Binh Chanh District), Nguyen Van Linh High School (District 8), Nguyen Van Cu High School (Hoc Mon District)... have recruited from several dozen to several hundred more candidates.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, for students who have studied at secondary schools in the areas of Can Gio, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Thu Duc city, if they register for schools in the same area as their secondary school, the total entrance exam score of the candidate will be considered according to the standard score of the first choice of the public high school they want to register for.

Thu Duc City is divided into 3 areas, in which Area 1 includes schools in the old District 2, Area 2 includes schools in the old District 9 and Area 3 includes schools in the old Thu Duc District.

Each student can only register for additional enrollment at 1 public high school that has not yet met its assigned enrollment quota and cannot change schools after submitting the additional enrollment registration application.

The list and quota of schools recruiting additional grade 10 students will be announced by the Department before 5:00 p.m. on July 21. Candidates who are interested must submit their applications directly to high schools from July 22-27. Schools will consider from high to low until they have recruited enough students, and will announce the list of successful candidates on August 6.
