There is a full, uncut translation of 'How the Steel Was Tempered'

The translation by translator Dao Minh Hiep can be considered the most complete version, translated from the original Russian of the famous book 'How the Steel Was Tempered', objectively reflecting the nature of life and society in the Soviet Union in the 1930s.

How the Steel Was Tempered is a novel written by Nikolai Alekseyevich Ostrovsky, a famous Soviet military writer, in 1930. The work tells the story of Pavel Korchagin, who is the embodiment of the author and also typical of Soviet youth at that time.

That is the image of a young man trained on the revolutionary path. Pavel has gone through many hardships but still has strong faith, noble qualities and is loyal to his ideals, the people and the country.

The book How the Steel Was Tempered by translator Dao Minh Hiep was released to Vietnamese readers in 2023, but until now, on some book forums, readers are still interested in and looking to buy this book.

In a recent introduction to this translation on Facebook, reader Pham Hong Ha commented: "I have read Mr. Hiep's version. There are some differences in some words but it is still very engaging."

Translator Dao Minh Hiep once shared with Tuoi Tre the biggest difference that surprised him was that while previous translations were often quite brief, mainly about the Russian October Revolution and love in the revolutionary context, the original 600-page version of this novel has more interesting content:

"The work reflects the entire context of life in the Soviet Union after the October Revolution, including achievements, advantages as well as negative aspects, such as: the work of industrial and commercial reform, overthrowing the comprador bourgeoisie, land reform...

The new, complete translation from the original Russian text fully and objectively reflects the nature of life and society in the Soviet Union at that time. The picture is not only rosy but also has many other colors."

How the Steel Was Tempered has an immortal saying: "The most precious thing for a man is life. He only lives once. He must live so as to feel no painful regrets for wasted years, no shame for a mean and despicable past, so that when he dies he can say: all my life, all my strength, I have dedicated to the noblest cause in the world, the cause of fighting for the liberation of mankind".

And until now, these words still retain their value, worthy of being an epic poem and greatly influencing many generations of revolutionary youth.
