Luu Thi Kim Nguyen, 12 years old, 6th grade student at Phung Thanh Van Secondary School (Tan Dong commune, Dong Thap province) is one of 200 disadvantaged students with good and excellent achievements in Long Thuan ward, Tan Dong commune and Hiep Duc commune, Dong Thap province who received the "Sowing seeds of knowledge" scholarship on October 11.
I know how to ride a bike but my family doesn't have enough money to buy one.
The program was held at the hall of the Long Thuan Ward People's Committee, organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper in coordination with Dong Thap Provincial Youth Union. Each scholarship is worth 2 million VND, including bicycles and school supplies. The total value of the program in Dong Thap province is more than 400 million VND, sponsored by Agribank Phu Nhuan branch, Ho Chi Minh City.
Nguyen said that his family had two brothers but only one bicycle. Before, when his second brother was still in school, Nguyen was taken to school by his mother on a motorbike, or sometimes by his friends. Since his second brother dropped out of school, Nguyen has been riding his own bicycle to school on his brother’s bike.
"That bike was given to my second brother by the school, but it was old and often broken, so it often had problems when riding to school. Now that I have a new bike, I'm very happy. I will try to go to school regularly, not skip school like my second brother, and will study really well," Nguyen said.
Like Kim Nguyen, Bui Tuan Kiet, a 4.2 grade student at Tran Hung Dao Secondary School (Dong Thap province), also goes to school by hitchhiking with friends. Although he has been able to ride a bike since 3rd grade, because his family cannot afford to buy a bike, Kiet often gets rides from friends, and is occasionally taken to school by his mother.
"Now that I have a new bike, I can ride it to school by myself. If anyone has a broken bike or doesn't have a bike like I did back then, I will take them with me," Kiet happily shared on the day he received the new bike from the sponsor.
