A dog named Koume in Chiba city is being praised after saving the life of a man having a heart attack by barking loudly to alert people.

The Wakaba Ward Horse Riding Club in Chiba City, eastern Japan, said the man in his 50s collapsed at the horse riding park on February 25, CNN reported on May 9. His 5-year-old dog, Koume, barked loudly to alert him.

People heard the barking and ran to the man's aid. According to the club, Koume's barking helped staff quickly call an ambulance, and paramedics used an automated external defibrillator on the man.

"Koume is usually quiet and rarely barks," said 23-year-old horse trainer Yuna Maruo, who helped rescue the man that day. "But when there is an emergency, Koume will bark."

Wakaba Fire Department says heart attack victims can be saved in time if people are alert to "the smallest change".

"Koume's barking and the actions of the equestrian club staff were the perfect response," said a fire official.

The man has since recovered and returned to the riding club. Koume was presented with a letter of thanks by local fire officials at a special ceremony last month.

The club said it has bred dogs to welcome members for generations. According to Maruo, Koume has sounded the alarm when a horse tried to escape by jumping over a fence or when an old horse could not stand on its own.
