Contrary to the joy of children when they can rest after a hard school year, parents are worried about managing, caring for and looking after their children during the summer. When children are out of school, parents still have to go to work. Managing children safely is difficult, helping them have a fun, entertaining and rewarding summer vacation is even more difficult.
Although the school year ends at the end of May, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh in Luong Bang town (Kim Dong) has been busy looking for extra classes for her child. Ms. Thanh confided: "I have a son who is in grade 3 this year, I don't feel safe leaving him at home alone. So I asked the teacher to both teach and look after him during the summer." Children are on summer vacation while parents are still busy with work, so how to make sure their children have a fun, healthy, useful and safe summer vacation is not simple. Especially when there is a lack of playgrounds, entertainment areas, and talent training centers for children. Moreover, letting children participate in talent courses at the center also faces many difficulties. Because each class usually lasts only about 2 hours, taking and picking up children to the centers to participate in the course also has many shortcomings. Therefore, many parents are not "keen" on letting their children attend talent courses during the summer.
Having 2 children in 3rd grade and 5-year-old kindergarten, but every summer, Ms. Tran Thi Hoa in An Tao ward (Hung Yen city) chooses to let her children stay home to watch TV and use the phone. Ms. Hoa said that her husband and wife work for a garment company, going to work from 7am to 7pm. When going to work, they lock the door from the outside, leaving the 2 children at home to watch TV and use the phone. Knowing that leaving the children at home will pose a potential safety risk, but the grandparents live far away and are old and weak, Ms. Hoa has no choice but to "lock" the children at home to be friends with the TV. Leaving children at home to play by themselves is also very dangerous, and letting them play together is also not safe. Because there have been cases of children at home having accidents involving electricity, water, fire; children playing in residential areas having accidents, fighting or being tricked by bad guys. Older children, at the age of middle school and high school students, are on summer vacation and their parents do not closely supervise and manage them, so they easily get lost in video games and online games.
Summer vacation has not yet begun, but in recent days, tragic drowning incidents have occurred in Tien Lu district and My Hao town, causing concern among parents.
Ms. Tran Thi Lan in Hai Thang commune (Tien Lu) expressed: As a parent, everyone wants to care for their children, but due to work conditions, I cannot be with my children often. Although I forbid my children from going to the river to bathe, when I go to work, I still worry whether my children will sneak out to bathe in the river with their friends.
In fact, during the summer, children suffer from accidents and drowning every year. The lack of playgrounds, lack of adult supervision, and living environments with many potential safety risks always directly threaten the health and lives of children.
According to teachers of skills and educational psychology, summer vacation should be for children to participate in cultural activities, healthy entertainment... according to their needs and interests. Because in addition to studying culture, children have many other things to learn and need to be equipped during the precious summer months - things that schools currently do not have enough time to teach them. Parents should consider, based on the actual needs of their children, to find courses on survival skills, self-control; self-service skills; communication courses, military semesters; anti-abuse and violence skills; music courses, dance, drawing, martial arts, swimming lessons... so that children can express their personality, abilities and strengths. That is a way to help children develop comprehensively and discover their talents, thereby creating a foundation for them to be able to promote those strengths and talents in the future. It is also one of the appropriate ways to manage children, helping them have a safe, healthy, truly joyful and rewarding summer vacation.
