The "Brother" shows are a launching pad for many young musical talents, but also make the public wonder: After concerts with hundreds of thousands of spectators, what will come next?
The "Big Brothers" dominating Vietnamese showbiz
Two years ago, the live show at My Dinh Stadium by the Korean group BlackPink covered all newspapers and social media platforms, with 60,000 audiences in two shows, revenue of 13 million USD (about 340 billion VND), the story lasted for a whole year on forums, became a model and there were continuous comparisons, analysis, and evaluations. When will Vietnam have super-huge live shows like what the 4 girls of the group "Black Pink" have done?
It should also be added that in the history of VPop, only My Tam is the only singer who has ever organized a personal live show "Tri am" at My Dinh National Stadium in 2022, with 30,000 spectators and only held for one music night.
And just one year later, the super-massive live shows were called concerts to affirm their class over the continuously organized live shows that were unprecedented in the history of Vietnamese music. “Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai” and “Anh trai say hi” were the two names mentioned most often.
“Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” had its first performance last March in Ho Chi Minh City, with more than 30 brothers from the popular reality TV show of the same name, with familiar faces of showbiz: Bang Kieu, Trong Hieu, Phan Dinh Tung and Tuan Hung, BB Tran, Thien Minh, Kay Tran, Bui Cong Nam, Jun Pham, Truong The Vinh, Soobin, Tu Long, ST Son Thach... This first concert had information that the number of spectators was up to about 45,000 people, which means 15,000 more than the number of spectators who came to see BlackPink and My Tam.
Not to be outdone, “Anh trai say hi” later held a concert and had a large audience, not less than “Anh trai vu ngan chong gai”. The biggest difference is that most of the artists participating in “Anh trai vu ngan chong gai” are over 30 years old, while “Anh trai say hi” are young faces, under 30 years old, very new to the Vietnamese music scene.
The singers of “Anh trai say hi”: Isaac, Song Luan, Hieuthuhai, Anh Tu Atus, Erik, Hurrykng, Negav, Quang Hung MasterD, Rhyder, Duc Phuc, Wean Le, Duong Domic, Hung Huynh, Hai Dang Doo, Phap Kieu... every time they sing, they become hits: Walk, Kim phuong kim gio, Catch me if you can, Dau doc hon, Ngao ngo, Ngan nga, Love sand, Sao hang A, Tinh dau qua tain...
Each “Brother” show organizes 6 concerts, if the average audience is 30,000/show, then in total there have been about 400,000 audiences coming to the “Brother” shows in the past year. The producer has not yet announced the official revenue, but the number is not small.
Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture andEducation , said: The success of the concerts shows that the domestic performing arts industry has great potential. The shows that are well received by the audience are the premise for many large programs to flourish, creating creative opportunities for artists and a space for audiences to enjoy art, creating a cultural identity of Vietnam with other countries in the region.
However, the question is, after the "Brother" concerts, what will be new and more attractive?
After concerts with hundreds of thousands of spectators, what remains?
Taking advantage of the attraction of the “Big Brothers”, the organizers continuously held concerts in many provinces and cities. Many people think that the producers are trying to get lucky and salvage when these shows still attract a large audience for a long time.
There is a reason for this issue, as the Vietnamese music market and public tastes will not enjoy things that are too old forever. Not to mention the international music market is always "looking" at Vietnam, one of the places that favor the Hay Lu wave and many audiences like to listen to foreign music.
After the resounding success of the "Brother" concerts, the participating singers and artists took advantage of the heat to release new products, but the lack of preparation, depth, and proper investment caused these products to almost fall into oblivion, the audience only remembered the old compositions at the time of the show. Do Phu Quy caused boredom with "Pickleball", Hung Huynh was suspected of plagiarizing BTS's Jungkook with the MV "Khên the om mat", Hieuthuhai with "Trinh" was converted into a parody song and received more praise than praise...
It is worth mentioning that the shows of the "Brothers" have been involved in many controversies related to plagiarism, overly sexy performances, and many stages of organization are considered unprofessional. The performance "Waves Lapping the Shore" (Erik's team) has the same staging, costumes, and many dance moves as the Whale incarnating the Lonely Island, a competition in Chuang 2021 (China).
Fans are looking forward to quality shows and are hoping that there won't be a "one-minute flash of glory" after the grand shows.
The cultural industry in general, and music in particular, if they want to firmly go out to the "big sea", they must have in-depth investment and professional organization at the highest level. They cannot "live on the fly", they must be built on a "multi-legged stool" of human and material resources, especially truly talented artists and singers, with supporting industries, fashion, design, sound, lighting, and not live on plagiarism...
Only then can the music industry be properly shaped and bring in large revenues.
