Accordingly, in response to the ever-changing demands of English teaching and learning in Southeast Asia, the British Council announces the ASEAN TeachingEnglish 2025: Adapting to Change Webinar - an innovative, multi-format professional development event for English teachers, educators and policy makers in the ASEAN region.
Taking place from 14-30 October 2025, the webinar will provide free, high-quality professional development and new perspectives to support teachers, lecturers and those working in the field of English language teaching in diverse and changing educational environments. From the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom to policy changes in ASEAN countries, English language teaching and learning is under pressure to adapt.
This workshop is not only in response to new conditions, but also a pioneering demonstration of the British Council’s commitment to supporting the region’s development goals through English language education as a tool for opportunity, connection and innovation.

As ASEAN countries face social, economic and technological upheavals, English continues to play a key role in regional integration, cross-border mobility and expanding opportunities, said Eilidh Hamilton, Director of Cultural Engagement for East Asia. This workshop is a platform for cross-cultural collaboration, innovation and adaptability.
“By connecting educators across the region, we are not only sharing effective practices, but also shaping together a more connected and flexible future for English teaching and learning in Southeast Asia,” said Eilidh Hamilton.
Unlike traditional online conferences, the 2025 conference will include: keynote presentations (live and recorded) from global and regional experts on adaptive teaching; in-depth discussions focusing on cross-border collaboration and adaptive strategies; short demonstrations from real classrooms across the region; and a digital exhibition showcasing evidence-based teacher practices.
The discussion sessions covered: AI in English language teaching, skills-based learning, education in crisis, and teacher leadership – reflecting on the realities teachers are facing and preparing for the next steps.
The British Council is working with teachers, ministries, universities and teacher associations in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia to ensure the content is relevant to local contexts and delivered on a unified regional platform. The sessions will be broadcast in convenient time zones and live on social media to engage a wide range of teachers.
With a focus on classroom-ready tools, replicable development models, and low-tech solutions for challenging contexts, the workshop aims to have a lasting impact on English language teaching and learning in ASEAN countries. The effectiveness of this professional development program will be measured through participation data, feedback surveys, and follow-up studies to assess how teachers apply the strategies in their classrooms.
