The 2024 Asian Short Film Festival will focus on emerging global issues amid ongoing conflicts and disasters around the world , and will also screen the first film written by artificial intelligence (AI).
With the theme "Light up life", the organizers hope that the selected films will arouse empathy, discovery and inspiration for viewers.
Multiple perspectives
One of these films is "Palestine Islands" - a French film set in a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank.
The film tells the story of a young Palestinian girl who tries to convince her blind grandfather that the wall built by Israel separating the refugee camp where they live from their hometown of Jaffa has collapsed.
In the category for films made with smartphones, the film "Siren! Air Raid Alert! Head for Cover!" also deals with another major ongoing conflict.
The 5-minute documentary by Ukrainian cinema was made from footage taken by Ukrainian citizens in the war zone.
Equally impressive is "Efe," a documentary directed and shot by journalist Shiori Ito - now an icon of the #MeToo movement in Japan.
The film is a story about life after the earthquake in Türkiye - Syria in February 2023 through the perspective of a 14-year-old boy.
Showing a movie entirely created by artificial intelligence
The Asian Short Film Festival was founded in 1999 by Japanese actor Tetsuya Bessho.
This is the only international short film festival in Asia with five competing film categories, aiming towards the following year's Oscars.
Taking place in a hybrid format of both online and live screenings, this year's Asian Short Film Festival will feature approximately 270 films, selected from 4,936 competing films, representing 114 countries and territories around the world.
In the context of technology being prevalent in recent years, audiences will also enjoy a series of special films, made with the support of AI.
Among these, the most prominent are the Austrian experimental animated film "The Artificial Conjuring Circle" - the first film made entirely using AI technology, and the Chinese film "Dragon Gate" - the first watercolor-style animated short film using AI-generated content.
In addition, this year's event also opens "Life Log Box" - an online marketplace for short film creators to connect business opportunities.
