Finland launches world's largest sand-based thermal battery
Finland launches world's largest sand thermal battery The sand thermal battery system in the town of Pornainen, developed by Polar Night Energy, uses 2,000 tonnes of crushed soapstone to store heat using electricity from renewable sources. This heat is used to heat buildings and significantly reduces the consumption of oil and wood in the town's central heating system.
The thermal battery can store 1,000 megawatt-hours of heat for weeks, with a loss rate of only 10-15%. In addition to cutting fuel costs, the system takes advantage of cheap electricity from the Finnish grid, which is dominated by renewables and nuclear. Thermal battery technology is gaining traction as renewables grow, promising to be an economical solution for sustainable energy storage in the future.
