What is anti-lock braking?

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is an active safety feature that helps reduce vehicle speed safely in an emergency. This feature is common on most cars today. In some countries, this is also one of the mandatory systems on cars.

ABS technology was born 45 years ago and has become popular in cars.

According to car manufacturers, on cars with ABS, the wheels will not lock in emergency braking situations, preventing the wheels from sliding on the road surface. From there, the driver will easily control the steering direction and ensure the car body is always in a stable condition.

The anti-lock braking system has the function of controlling the locking of the wheels in emergency braking situations. Specifically, this system helps the driver to steer to avoid obstacles in front, while quickly reducing the speed to stop the vehicle without fear of losing control. Thereby ensuring the safety of vehicle users if they encounter unexpected situations when participating in traffic.

With the advantages of ABS braking system on cars, in Vietnam, from 2016 to now, many motorbike manufacturers have gradually equipped this system on popular models. Honda must be the first to mention when equipping ABS for Honda SH scooter model.

Regarding the operating principle of ABS on motorbikes, the system will receive information from sensors as well as the driver's braking movements to apply brake pressure. With the frequency of pressing and releasing the brake clamp many times per second, ABS brakes keep the motorbike stable, limiting the state of brake lock. Thereby increasing balance and road grip, helping the vehicle move more safely.

Popular motorbike models today are also equipped with ABS to increase safety and help compete better.

Popular racing motorcycles equipped with ABS

After Honda SH, a series of popular motorbike models in segments such as manual clutch motorbikes or scooters have been equipped with ABS brakes to compete better. Currently, Honda has equipped ABS for popular models such as SH Mode, SH350i, Air Blade, Vario or Winner X.

In 2018, Piaggio Vietnam simultaneously launched new models including Medley, Liberty and Vespa Sprint. Besides design and equipment upgrades, most notably, these models all have versions equipped with ABS anti-lock braking technology.

Piaggio models can all be considered in the high-end scooter segment, competing directly with models such as Honda SH or SH Mode. Equipping ABS not only increases safety for users but also increases competitiveness.

In addition to Piaggio models, Yamaha has also applied ABS technology to a series of key models such as NVX, Grande hybrid or FreeGo. Most recently, the Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA 2023 has also been equipped with ABS to increase safety for users, while helping the model compete better with its rival Winner X, which has had this technology for a long time.

Not only traditional gasoline motorbikes but electric motorbikes now also have ABS. For example, VinFast has equipped ABS on the front wheel of the Vento S electric motorbike and both the front and rear wheels of the Theon S.

In addition, some models of SYM or Kymco are also equipped with ABS technology. However, depending on the type of vehicle, manufacturers will equip ABS for the front wheel or both wheels.
