Expecting a bumper crop from lychee

Sharing with Thanh Nien , Mr. Ngo Van Cuong, in charge of the lychee export production team of Phuc Hoa Early Lychee Production and Consumption Cooperative (Phuc Hoa Commune, Tan Yen District, Bac Giang Province), said that right after the conference to promote lychee consumption in 2025 organized by the Bac Giang Provincial People's Committee on May 29, this cooperative welcomed more than 100 Chinese and Japanese businessmen and enterprises to survey.

With 1.2 hectares of lychee grown for export to Japan, Mr. Cuong estimates that this year's lychee output will reach 18 - 20 tons, 20% higher than in 2004, and a business has signed a purchase contract.

"The export price of lychee signed with the enterprise is 35,000 VND/kg. After many years of exporting lychee to Japan, the gardeners have mastered the process, techniques, and list of pesticides used. But now, people must try to do better so that each year the lychee fruit is more even, beautiful, and sweeter," said Mr. Cuong.

According to the People's Committee of Bac Giang province, the favorable weather has led to a flowering rate of over 90% and a fruit set rate of over 80%. It is predicted that this year, lychee will be a "big hit". The total lychee output in Bac Giang province is estimated at over 165,000 tons, a sharp increase from 100,000 tons in 2024.

Mr. Pham Van Thinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province, said that the locality is in the peak of the early-ripening lychee harvest, with an output of about 60,000 tons. The lychee trees are cared for by farmers with the right techniques, and the quality of this year's fruit is considered superior with large, sweet fruit, thick flesh and a more beautiful appearance than in 2024.

According to Mr. Thinh, Bac Giang lychee is cultivated according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic processes; and is protected by trademarks and geographical indications in major markets such as China, the US, Japan, Korea, Australia, Singapore, etc.

To ensure quality standards and export conditions, this locality is strictly managing 469 growing area codes with a total area of more than 19,300 hectares and 55 export lychee packaging facility codes.

In Hai Duong , after the "failure" of 2024, 8,800 hectares of lychee are expected to yield about 60,000 tons. Of which, early-ripening lychee is about 32,500 tons, harvested since May 25, and main-season lychee is about 27,500 tons, expected to be harvested from June 10 to 30.

In Thanh Ha District alone - the largest lychee "capital" in Hai Duong, the expected output is 38,000 - 40,000 tons. Currently, Thanh Ha is a raw material area purchased by many businesses for export to demanding markets such as the US, Japan, etc.

Excited to "go abroad"

Right from the beginning of this year’s crop, lychee exports to markets have been very favorable. According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan, Vietnamese lychees are imported by Japanese enterprises and sold in all provinces: Fukushima, Aichi, Niigata…

After the first shipment cleared customs on May 28, nearly 50 tons of Thanh Ha and Luc Ngan lychees were loaded onto flights to Japan, but "supply still cannot meet demand." The selling price to consumers is about 1,800 Japanese yen/kg, equivalent to about 310,000 VND.

Ms. Nguyen Khanh Ly, Director of Senkyu Company (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan), said that after many years of persistent promotion, the current lychee consumption market is not only within the community of 600,000 Vietnamese people, but also more and more Japanese people are coming to this specialty fruit. Currently, Vietnamese lychee is a luxurious gift, especially in the eyes of the Japanese.

"This year's lychee season, we will import 200 tons of lychee to sell in more than 1,000 stores and supermarkets in Japan," said Ms. Ly.

Similarly, Ms. Do Linh Nham, Deputy Director of Toan Cau Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang), informed that this year's lychee has the best output and price in many years, and the company is receiving many export orders to Japan, Taiwan, etc. It is expected that from June 9, this company's lychee will be consumed by its partner in the Aeon supermarket chain in Japan.

According to Thanh Nien , in Lao Cai and Lang Son , every day hundreds of trucks carrying lychees are successfully exported to China. Right from the beginning of the season, Vietnam's largest lychee import market has announced many good news.

Leading a delegation of Chinese businessmen to the conference on promoting lychee consumption in 2025 in Bac Giang, Mr. Ly Thac, Deputy Director of the Department of Commerce of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (China), affirmed that the province has directed border gates to optimize procedures, "open green lanes" for Vietnamese lychees, improve customs clearance efficiency, and avoid cases of congestion and congestion like many years ago.
