At a court hearing in San Francisco on June 4, Reddit said AI company Anthropic used its data for commercial purposes without permission, without paying for it, and without complying with the platform's user data policy.

In its lawsuit, Reddit calls Anthropic a “latecomer to artificial intelligence that bills itself as the white knight of AI. That’s not the case at all.” The Orange Forum says Anthropic has accessed its platform more than 100,000 times since July 2024, despite previously claiming to have blocked the bots from collecting data.

“Anthropic intentionally trained its AI models using Reddit users’ personal data without their permission,” the lawsuit states, a practice that runs counter to the company’s previous contributions to the AI industry.

Data from Reddit is particularly useful for training models, according to AI executives. The platform hosts a wide range of conversational interactions between people, with more than 100,000 active subreddits.

In the lawsuit, Reddit cites a research paper published by Anthropic in 2021. The AI company highlighted the usefulness of data from the online forum in training artificial intelligence models.

Ben Lee, Reddit’s chief legal officer, said the “commercial exploitation” of Reddit content could be worth billions of dollars. The company said it had tried to negotiate with Anthropic but was unsuccessful. “We believe in an open internet. But that doesn’t mean we’re comfortable with exploitation,” Lee said.

Reddit signed a deal with Google in February 2024 to provide the company with AI training data. According to Bloomberg , the cam forum also signed a contract with an unnamed company worth about $60 million a year.

That same year, the company took steps to curb unauthorized data collection on its site. It introduced a public content policy for publicly accessible user data and updated its back-end code. This data policy included user protections, such as ensuring that deleted posts and comments would not be included in data licensing agreements.

This isn’t the first time the Amazon-backed AI startup has been sued for alleged copyright infringement. In August 2024, three authors filed a class-action lawsuit, accusing Anthropic of “building a multibillion-dollar business by stealing hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books.”

In October 2023, Universal Music also sued the company in Tennessee federal court for “systematic and widespread copyright infringement of song lyrics.” The case against Claude is part of a growing trend of lawsuits against AI companies.

Anthropic recently released its latest AI model, Claude Opus 4, which has been well received by the AI community and scored highly in industry-standard reviews. According to WSJ , an Anthropic spokesperson said the company disagrees with the allegations from Reddit and will defend itself vigorously.
