The moment that caused outrage in Uruguay.

The unprecedented moment of violence occurred during the match between San Lorenzo and Central Molino in the Maldonado province, Uruguay. The incident happened after two teammates of the San Lorenzo player were sent off for insulting the referee in the final minutes of the match.

According to video footage, referee Alexis Ferreira staggered back after the violent headbutt, blood pouring from his nose and mouth. He confirmed that he lost two teeth and suffered a severe nosebleed, requiring urgent medical attention.

"We make mistakes like the players, but that never justifies violence," said Ferreira, warning of an increase in violence against referees, with more than five similar attacks recorded in Maldonado this year alone.

The player who caused the headbutt has now appeared before the Maldonado Prosecutor's Office. His lawyer said the cause stemmed from a long-standing feud with the referee, and said his client "regrets, apologizes directly and is willing to help with medical treatment costs." Prosecutor Ana Roses has opened an investigation and plans to prosecute the player for intentionally causing serious injury.

Alfredo Isnardi, president of the Maldonado Promotion League, called the incident an "unprecedented level of violence" and announced that the player would be banned from all soccer activities in the country. In protest, Major League Maldonado and the local referees association suspended the entire season. Disciplinary measures against San Lorenzo are also being considered.
