There is a view that: Teaching a good student to become excellent is normal, but teaching a weak student to become good is the true ability of a teacher. The story of teacher Nguyen Thi Hue and her colleagues and students of Dai Mo High School ( Hanoi ), a school that is considered a "village" school, belonging to the group of schools with a rather modest starting point in the capital, is a vivid proof of that.

Unexpected results at a school with low entrance scores
According to the statistics of the 2025 high school graduation exam scores of Hanoi, the average score of Literature of Dai Mo High School (Nam Tu Liem District) reached 8.16 points, exceeding the average score of Hanoi and the whole country (the average score of Literature of Hanoi is 7.63, the whole country is 7).

Talking to Knowledge and Life, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue, Head of the Literature Group of the School, shared: The results of the high school graduation exam in Literature this year made teachers and students extremely excited. In the 2025 National High School Graduation Exam, students of Dai Mo High School achieved many outstanding achievements, demonstrating their spirit of overcoming difficulties, determination and continuous efforts throughout 12 years of study.
The school has 159 students who scored from 9 to 9.75 in Literature. More proudly, the school has 05 Valedictorians in Literature with a score of 9.75. Among them, class 12D4, directly taught by Ms. Hue, which is a general class, achieved an average score of 9.1 in Literature. Among them, 03 students scored 9.75: Pham Thuy Linh, Ly Khanh Huyen, Nghiem Thi Mai Phuong.
What is special is that Dai Mo High School is among the schools with a rather modest starting point compared to other schools in the capital, so this result is a joy multiplied many times over for teachers and students, because it is the result of a long journey full of effort and hardship.
The “Formula” of Love and the Right Method
For Ms. Hue and her colleagues in the Literature group, to achieve the above results there is no miracle other than dedication and a correct method.
“I think the first important thing for students to progress is to make them love the subject, feel that learning literature is very interesting, and not difficult at all,” Ms. Hue confided. With that concept, Ms. Hue and her colleagues have made Literature more accessible by creating simple, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-implement “formulas” for writing.

It is not a dry formula, but a systematic method system that the entire Literature group of the school has agreed upon and implemented synchronously. Instead of teaching knowledge of the old program, teachers in the group focus on teaching methods and skills according to the capacity development orientation of the new 2018 General Education Program, helping students practice all skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing.
In particular, in the graduation exam review program, the Literature group focuses on teaching by topic. With the social argumentation topic, teachers help students master how to do each type of essay and each type of question.
With the Reading Comprehension and Writing Literature Paragraphs Topic, students are taught according to genre characteristics. For each genre such as poetry, story, memoir, drama... students will grasp the characteristics of each type. Then, they will grasp how to answer reading comprehension questions and how to write paragraphs related to the genre.
"Everything is systematically organized, repeated and gradually improved from grade 10 to grade 12," Ms. Hue shared.
Along with a correct method, the teachers' perseverance and dedication are extremely important factors. Each essay is carefully graded, corrected, and commented on by the teachers, helping each student to recognize the strengths and weaknesses in their work, and from there, guiding them on how to overcome them. With perseverance, taking small steps like that, students gradually lose their fear, and eventually love and study Literature well.
Teachers strive, students are diligent: Sweet fruit from resonance
Teachers’ methods are only successful when there is effort from students. Ms. Hue shared that the decisive factor for students to “swim against the current” is their diligence and passion for the subject.
For each type of exercise, after being instructed by teachers on how to correct and overcome, students will go home and do it again. Some students will do it two or three times until they master it. "Practice makes perfect", the more you practice, the better you will improve.

This success is also the effort of a whole team. Ms. Hue said that she is always grateful for being able to work side by side with talented, dedicated colleagues who are always devoted to their students, such as Ms. Huong Giang, Ms. Phan Oanh, Ms. Dao Hien; always making efforts, being creative, and innovating in each lesson, such as Ms. Phuong Loan, Ms. Huong Thao, Ms. Nguyet Anh...

“Teaching at Dai Mo High School requires dedication and love for students, otherwise we will get discouraged quickly. Because the students are weak at the beginning, lack passion for learning, many of them are playful and lazy to study. There are also times when we feel tired and stressed because we have not made any progress in teaching them for a long time, but every time we look into the eyes of our students, feel their love for us, see their efforts to overcome themselves every day, see the future in their eyes, each of us teachers gets more energy,” Ms. Hue confided.

Looking back on the journey, although it was tiring and difficult, for Ms. Hue and her colleagues, it was the boundless happiness of being a companion who helped the children reach their dreams.
"When witnessing the joy and happiness of the children in the moment of receiving the results, receiving the emotional confidences and sharing from the children and parents, for us, no happiness can compare. That is the greatest source of encouragement for every teacher in the process of working", Ms. Hue was moved.
The "comeback" from 4 points to become Valedictorian of Literature
When she first entered the school, she once received a score of 4 in Literature, but became one of the valedictorians of the Literature subject of the 2025 High School Graduation Exam with a score of 9.75. Pham Thuy Linh, a student of class 12D4, is one of the clear evidences of the successful "reversal" journey at Dai Mo High School.
Linh said that when she first entered 10th grade, she did not have an effective learning method for Literature. She often wrote based on her emotions, wrote whatever came to mind, often got off topic, often answered reading comprehension questions ramblingly, lacking focus, often made serious mistakes in expression, word usage, and sentence structure... in tests. She even received a score of 4 in Literature from Ms. Hue herself.

“I used to think that I couldn’t learn this subject,” Linh confessed. But, with perseverance and strictness, with dedication and meticulousness, Ms. Hue helped her realize her strengths and weaknesses, and find a learning method that was right for her. Thanks to being trained in skills, and having the opportunity to participate in presentations and speak in front of a crowd, from a shy girl who was always afraid of making mistakes, Linh not only became bold and confident in expressing her personal opinions, but also showed her own creativity in each writing. For Linh, a good teacher is a teacher who “in addition to homework, also gives each student something to think about” (Tomlin). And I am lucky to have teachers like that.
When asked about her advice for students who are still struggling with the subject, Thuy Linh said that they should just explore , experience and try their best. “The journey ahead is long, the destination is endless. Failure is just a temporary delay in success. From there, you should try harder, learn from the experiences of those around you and don't be afraid to push your limits. Read and learn a lot, because knowledge is limitless,” Linh shared.
Also one of the students who scored 9.75 points in Literature, Nghiem Thi Mai Phuong, class 12D4, Dai Mo High School, still has the same feelings of surprise and joy. Mai Phuong said she did not think she could achieve such a high score.
According to Mai Phuong, the special thing about Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue's teaching method is the focus on practicing skills and test-taking methods. She not only teaches how to answer each question and how to do each type of test, but also lets students practice regularly, helping them get used to many different types of questions. "I find her teaching method very suitable for the new program. This year's test is also very good, very open and promotes students' creativity," Phuong commented.
From her journey, Phuong believes that any student, even with low entrance scores, can succeed if they have a good learning method, guidance from teachers and most importantly, diligence and effort from each individual.
Mr. Nguyen Duy Binh, Principal of Dai Mo High School, said that with the school's entrance score still modest compared to the city's average, the output results have proven the tireless efforts of both teachers and students.
“There are classes where the average score for Literature is 9.1, which can be considered as 100% excellent. That is a result beyond expectations, we are very happy and proud,” Mr. Binh shared.
According to Mr. Binh, the important role of the teaching staff, especially the Literature department, in achieving this result is due to their dedication, love for their profession, love for their students, and a well-structured teaching method.
“The teachers are very hard-working, they have divided the students according to their abilities to have appropriate teaching methods for each individual. For those who are still weak, the teachers will tutor them individually, foster and consolidate their knowledge. Throughout the whole process, the teachers always accompany the students, with enthusiasm and responsibility. It is the review strategy, training and methodical guidance of the subject group that helps students achieve the best results,” Mr. Binh shared.
