Williams returns after nearly two years of absence. |
The former Manchester United defender joined the Championship side after a successful trial in pre-season. Williams has been handed a one-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year.
Williams left Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 when his contract expired and has been without a club since. The 24-year-old defender was on loan at Ipswich Town, but injury forced him back to Manchester for treatment and has been out of professional football for the past 20 months.
Williams has also been in legal trouble during his time off the court. In May, he was given a 14-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving. The court heard that Williams was driving at 100mph, colliding with a Ford Fiesta and then crashing into a median in Wilmslow while carrying a female passenger.
Fortunately, those involved suffered only minor injuries. Williams was also hospitalized and faces a number of mental and neurological health issues. In court, his defense attorney said Williams was truly remorseful and was in a more stable condition both physically and mentally.
Under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Williams was hailed as "brave as a lion" and expected to become a big star. But after many years of playing football, Williams could not shine as expected.
