Former US Vice President Mike Pence.
According to CNN, the news that Mr. Pence is running for president for the next term was first reported by NBC News.
CNN said that Mr. Pence's announcement of his candidacy in Iowa, rather than his home state of Indiana, shows that he is focusing on the state that often holds the first caucus in the Republican presidential nomination process.
When he runs, Mr. Pence will face off directly with his former boss, former President Donald Trump – currently the leading candidate among Republican presidential candidates.
Mr. Pence will turn 74 on June 7. Before being appointed as Mr. Trump's vice president in the 2016 election, Mr. Pence was the governor of Indiana and a former US congressman.
In recent speeches, Mr. Pence has focused on fiscal responsibility and reform of entitlement programs, supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, and promoting anti-abortion stances and opposing “radical gender ideology.”
In addition, according to CNN, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also plans to announce his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election on June 6. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will also make the announcement on June 7 in Fargo.
Reuters said that the growing number of candidates entering the 2024 White House race has increased concerns about a split in the Republican Party. So far, nine candidates from this party have announced or are close to announcing their candidacies.
