CNN said that Mr. Pence's announcement of his candidacy in Iowa, rather than his home state of Indiana, shows that he is focusing on the state that often holds the first caucus in the Republican presidential nomination process.

When he runs, Mr. Pence will face off directly with his former boss, former President Donald Trump – currently the leading candidate among Republican presidential candidates.

Mr. Pence will turn 74 on June 7. Before being appointed as Mr. Trump's vice president in the 2016 election, Mr. Pence was the governor of Indiana and a former US congressman.

In recent speeches, Mr. Pence has focused on fiscal responsibility and reform of entitlement programs, supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, and promoting anti-abortion stances and opposing “radical gender ideology.”
