Today, August 2, 2025, education management officials in Ho Chi Minh City said that up to this point, there has been no announcement about the schedule for the new school year 2025-2026, therefore, there has been no specific announcement of the date when students will return to school.
On August 2, the principal of a primary school in Minh Phung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City also said that localities are waiting for the Ministry of Education and Training to issue a framework for the new school year schedule for preschool education, general education and continuing education. Based on the document of the Ministry of Education and Training, the People's Committees of provinces and cities will issue a schedule for the 2025-2026 school year. Then, based on the guidance documents and announcements of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, schools will notify and guide parents about the school return schedule for students in each class, including first graders.
What was the school calendar like for students in previous school years?
For the 2024-2025 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that the time frame for this school year for preschool education, general education and continuing education applied nationwide is to return to school at least 1 week before the opening day. For grade 1 students, the earliest time to return to school is 2 weeks before the opening day. The opening day is September 5, 2024.
For the 2023-2024 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that the earliest time to return to school is 1 week before the opening day, and for grade 1, the earliest time to return to school is 2 weeks before the opening day. According to Decision No. 2171/QD-BGDDT dated July 28, 2023 of the Ministry of Education and Training on the time frame for the 2023-2024 school year, the end of semester 1 is before January 15, 2024; the completion of the second semester education plan is before May 25, 2024 and the end of the school year is before May 31, 2024.
Students at all levels will have summer vacation until August, before entering the 2025-2026 school year.

In the 2022-2023 school year, according to the 2022-2023 school year schedule issued by the Ministry of Education and Training for preschool education, general education and continuing education nationwide, the opening day will be held on September 5, 2022. The earliest time to return to school is 1 week before the opening day. For grade 1, the earliest time to return to school is 2 weeks before the opening day.
Thus, it can be seen that in recent school years, the opening day of students nationwide and in Ho Chi Minh City is September 5, the earliest school start date is 1 week before the opening day. Particularly for grade 1, students start school at least 2 weeks before the opening day.
Currently, there is no official announcement of the school opening schedule and the opening day for students nationwide and students in Ho Chi Minh City. However, it is expected that the opening day will be September 5, 2025 (Friday); and the school opening day for students in Ho Chi Minh City may be 1 week earlier than September 5, which means it will fall in the last week of August 2025 (from August 25 to August 29).
