According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule, the Ministry of Education and Training requires that students return to school one week before the opening day, which is August 29. Grades 1, 9 and 12 will return to school two weeks before the opening day, which is August 22.
This adjustment is to help grades 1, 9, and 12 prepare for the transition exam or graduation exam. They need to spend time consolidating knowledge and forming a study routine before entering the new school year.
In Ho Chi Minh City, students in grades 1, 9, and 12 will return to school on August 20. The remaining grades will return to school on August 25. Khanh Hoa and Lao Cai provinces also announced the return date for August 27. Students in grades 1, 9, and 12 will return to school on August 20.
Meanwhile, An Giang , Hung Yen, and Quang Ngai provinces set the school return date for August 29. Students in grades 1, 9, and 12 will return to school on August 22.
Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a framework for the 2025-2026 school year for preschool education, general education and continuing education nationwide. Accordingly, the earliest time to return to school is 1 week before the opening day. For grades 1, 9 and 12, the earliest time to return to school is 2 weeks before the opening day. The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2025; the first semester will end before January 18, 2026; the program will be completed and the school year will end before May 31, 2026. Consideration of recognition of completion of primary school program and recognition of graduation from secondary school before June 30, 2026. Enrollment for the first grade is scheduled to be completed by July 31, 2026; the 2026 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 11 and 12, 2026. Other national exams are organized according to regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training. The Ministry of Education and Training also provides guidelines on the principles for developing local school year schedules. Specifically, local school year schedules must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (18 weeks for semester I and 17 weeks for semester II). School year schedules must be consistent with the characteristics and practical conditions of the locality. Holidays and Tet holidays are implemented according to the provisions of the Labor Code and annual guidelines. Teachers' annual leave is implemented during the summer vacation or can be arranged alternately at other times of the year to suit the specific characteristics and school year schedule of the locality. The school year schedule needs to ensure consistency for all levels of education in a residential area, especially in general schools with many levels of education. Also according to the Ministry of Education and Training, the Chairman of the People's Committee of the province or centrally-run city shall decide on the school year schedule for preschool education, general education and continuing education in accordance with local realities. The time for returning to school early and the extension of the school year shall not exceed 2 weeks compared to the provisions of this decision to ensure the implementation and completion of preschool education, general education and continuing education programs in case of being affected by natural disasters or epidemics; in special cases, the Ministry of Education and Training must be reported before implementation. The Director of the Department of Education and Training will decide to let students stay home from school in case of extreme weather or natural disasters and arrange make-up classes; ensure teachers' time off during the school year. |
