Present at the Hung Vu Commune Health Station during a population awareness session in early May 2026, we witnessed many women of childbearing age coming to receive advice on modern contraceptive methods. Not only were they introduced to the advantages and disadvantages of each method, but the health officials also guided them on how to choose a contraceptive method suitable for their health, economic conditions, and family's needs.
Ms. Hoang Thi Oanh, from Lang Huyen village, Hung Vu commune, shared: "Previously, I only knew about birth control pills and IUDs. Now, thanks to the more detailed advice from population officials, I understand more about new, safe, and convenient methods. I plan to choose either the implant or the injectable contraceptive method in June because it provides long-lasting contraception, eliminates the need to remember to take pills daily, and suits my lifestyle and work schedule."
Not only in Hung Vu commune, but in recent times, communication and counseling on modern contraceptive methods have been widely implemented in communes and wards throughout the province, helping people to increasingly access methods such as subcutaneous implants, contraceptive injections, and intrauterine devices…
Ms. Truong Thi Hang, Head of the Population Department (Department of Health), said: In recent years, people's awareness of reproductive health care and family planning has undergone many positive changes. People no longer rely mainly on traditional contraceptive methods or free distribution sources as before, but are increasingly proactive in learning about and choosing methods suitable to their health status and family's economic conditions.
According to Ms. Truong Thi Hang, from May 2025, when the free provision of contraceptives from the State ceases, the health sector has shifted its focus to strengthening communication and counseling to help people understand the advantages and disadvantages of each contraceptive method, proactively access modern contraceptive methods, and self-fund their use of contraceptives. From 2025 to the present, the entire province has organized nearly 50 community communication campaigns attracting more than 12,000 participants; distributed 94,500 leaflets and coordinated the publication of hundreds of news articles and photos on reproductive health care on mass media. Through these activities, women of childbearing age in the province have access to information on reproductive health care. In 2025, the province aims to have an additional 53,612 people participating in the use of modern contraceptive methods, achieving 103.1% of the plan. This is a positive sign, indicating that people's awareness of reproductive health care and family planning is increasing.
Ms. Hoang Thi Mien, a population officer at the Khanh Khe Commune Health Station, said: "Currently, the entire commune has 3,143 women of childbearing age, of which nearly 70% are using modern contraceptive methods. To encourage people to change their habits and confidently choose modern contraceptive methods, population officers and village collaborators regularly visit the area, understanding the specific circumstances of each family to provide appropriate advice. For those who are still hesitant, population collaborators directly explain the effectiveness, duration of use, costs, and precautions after implementing each method. Thanks to this approachable and practical communication, many people have proactively chosen suitable contraceptive methods to stabilize their family's economy and better care for their children."
Promoting social participation coupled with enhanced communication and counseling on family planning methods at the grassroots level is becoming a suitable approach in population and family planning work. In the coming time, the health sector will continue to promote communication in a way that is close to the grassroots and tailored to each target group; at the same time, it will leverage the role of village population collaborators in counseling and encouraging people to proactively access and choose appropriate family planning methods… thereby contributing to improving the quality of the population.
