Mr. Le Hong Thien, leader of the Urban Sketchers Club - DAU (University of Architecture) said that the club was established in 2017 with the goal of connecting people who share a passion for painting and architecture, regardless of gender or age. At the same time, it aims at a larger goal of preserving images of famous places in the city against the erosion of time.
“We are young people, facing the speed of urbanization of the city, the club was born with the desire to preserve the ancient features through sketches because Da Nang is a place with diverse topics and cultural locations. In addition, the club regularly organizes outdoor drawing events, not only in the city but also in neighboring provinces such as Quang Nam and Hue,” Mr. Thien happily said.
Architect Nguyen Dinh Viet, advisor of the Urban Sketchers Club - DAU, said that the club chose sketches because this type of painting records a moment and depicts an activity or object in black and white or mixed-color images. Through each person's strokes and perspective, the sketch will convey the story and message of the object or landscape.
The club currently has about 50 members, meeting every Monday and Sunday. On Mondays, the club will hold activities at school to study and equip new members with sketching knowledge; on Sundays, the club will paint outdoors at designated locations. Many people come to the club when they are still confused with the brush or the composition of a painting, but thanks to the guidance of other members, they have improved.
Recently, the outdoor painting activity in front of the headquarters of the National Assembly Delegation and the City People's Council organized by the Club has attracted many members and some foreign tourists to participate. Student Do Chau Anh, a member of the Club, said that in other paintings, the artist mainly creates the composition himself, but sketching requires nurturing emotions and looking at the drawing from multiple perspectives to express the soul of each location. The time to complete a sketch is usually 30 minutes, 1 hour or even longer because the sketch depends on the inspiration of the artist.
“Because I love sketching, I signed up to join the club nearly 2 years ago. In the beginning, my drawings were dry and were commented to have no emotion and messy layout. Through a long time of interacting and learning from seniors, my drawing ability has improved day by day,” he shared.
From Hanoi to Da Nang to live and study, student Ho Kim Thach, a member of the Urban Sketchers Club - DAU, said that joining the club helped him set foot in most of the famous places in the city, even the alleys, lanes, crooked roofs, ancient houses...
Thach said: “Through our love of sketching, we together recreated the above image with all the emotions we have. At the same time, I also want to spread meaningful messages about the people and land of Da Nang to the people as well as tourists.”
With the efforts of each Club member, over the past time, Urban Sketchers - DAU has won many awards in major competitions, typically the National Architecture Student Festival, the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2022. Notably, at the "Peace Wish" logo design competition organized by the People's Committee of Quang Tri province, Club members won 9/10 highest awards. Evaluating the effectiveness of the Club's activities, MSc. Ngo Tuan Anh, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, University of Architecture, said that through maintaining the Club's activities, Urban Sketchers - DAU helps members improve their skills and professional capacity.
In recent times, the club members have contributed a lot to sketching activities at historical sites and red addresses in Hai Chau, Son Tra and Hoa Vang districts. Thereby, contributing to preserving, promoting and spreading the value of these sites and red addresses.
