Great growth potential

The 12th Dak Nong Provincial Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025, set out one of the key tasks of developing the aluminum industry, aluminum smelting and renewable energy (wind power, solar power), building Dak Nong into a national aluminum industrial center.

Sticking to this task, since the beginning of the term, Dak Nong has focused on tasks and solutions to promote the development of the aluminum industry and achieved many remarkable results.

Nhan Co Alumina Factory is contributing nearly 40% to Dak Nong's industrial production value.

In recent years, Dak Nong has emerged as one of the bright spots of Vietnam’s mining industry. With its huge bauxite resources and key industrial projects, the province has set the ambition to become the national aluminum industrial center.

Dak Nong currently owns one of the largest bauxite mines in Vietnam, with total estimated reserves of more than 5.4 billion tons, accounting for nearly 60% of the country's total bauxite reserves.

This is a strategic resource, not only meeting domestic demand but also serving as a foundation for aluminum exports, boosting the provincial and national economy .

At the working session with the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment on March 12, 2024, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Muoi said that with abundant bauxite reserves, Dak Nong has great potential to develop the aluminum industry. This is a great competitive advantage of the province in the context of Vietnam's economy deeply integrating into the international market. Specifically, the province's bauxite resources are mainly concentrated in districts such as Dak R'lap, Tuy Duc, Dak Song, Dak Glong... In particular, Nhan Co commune, Dak R'lap district has become the most important aluminum mining and processing center of the province, with large aluminum projects being implemented.

Dak Nong Aluminum Company - TKV has been a key player in developing the aluminum industry in the province for many years. Nhan Co Aluminum Factory, with a designed capacity of 650,000 tons of aluminum per year, has been in operation since 2017 and has continuously achieved high production efficiency.

The company's alumina products are highly appreciated for their quality in demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, UAE... Nhan Co Alumina Factory has created a foundation for the bauxite - alumina - aluminum industry.

Dak Nong Aluminum Company's aluminum output in 2023 reached more than 712,000 tons; the company's revenue reached 3,690 billion VND, exceeding the set plan.

Not stopping there, Dak Nong is implementing the project to expand the Nhan Co Alumina Plant Phase 2, increasing the capacity to 1.3 million tons/year. When completed, this project will not only increase the production capacity of alumina - aluminum but also create thousands of jobs for local people. The project is expected to make a greater contribution to the State budget.

According to the zoning plan for exploration, exploitation, processing and use of bauxite ore in the period of 2007 - 2015, with a view to 2025 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 167 dated November 1, 2007 (referred to as Plan 167), the bauxite planning area accounts for 1/3 of Dak Nong's natural area.

Alumina is one of Dak Nong's export products with a sharp decrease in output in the first 6 months of 2024.
Dak Nong alumina products have been exported to many countries around the world.

Of which, the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has conducted exploration in 9 mining areas. The National Mineral Reserves Assessment Council has appraised and approved the bauxite exploration area in Dak Nong at 158,540 hectares, with reserves and ore resources of more than 992 million tons.

Towards sustainability

To realize the goal of becoming a national aluminum industrial center, Dak Nong not only focuses on production, but also focuses on developing sustainable, environmentally friendly industry.

Dak Nong has introduced many policies to encourage businesses to invest in advanced technologies, minimizing negative impacts on the environment in mining, processing alumina, and smelting aluminum.

Vice Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen emphasized: Dak Nong develops the aluminum industry in a sustainable manner, associated with environmental protection. Industrial projects in Dak Nong must strictly comply with environmental standards, and at the same time apply modern technological solutions to recycle and reuse waste generated during the production process.

One of the biggest challenges for the aluminum industry is the disposal of red mud – a by-product of the aluminum production process. Currently, Dak Nong is implementing red mud recycling solutions to minimize environmental pollution.

According to experts, recycling red mud not only helps reduce the load on landfills but can also create valuable products such as unburnt bricks or construction materials.

In addition to resources and technology, infrastructure is also a key factor determining Dak Nong's success in developing the aluminum industry.

Currently, Dak Nong province is investing heavily in infrastructure, especially transportation and energy, to ensure the ability to transport raw materials and aluminum products more conveniently and efficiently. Dak Nong has proposed upgrading the route connecting the bauxite mining area with major seaports and industrial zones, to facilitate the export of aluminum to international markets.

Bauxite mining in Dak Nong in recent times has been in compliance with legal regulations.

In addition, renewable energy projects such as wind power and solar power are also being encouraged by the province to develop to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply for aluminum factories.

Although Dak Nong is on the right track in developing its aluminum industry, the province still faces some major challenges.

Firstly, environmental protection during the process of mining and processing bauxite is still an issue that the province needs to solve. The balance between economic development and environmental protection is a problem that the province and businesses in Dak Nong need to carefully calculate.

Second, high-quality human resources to operate aluminum factories is also an issue that Dak Nong needs to focus on.

Currently, the province is cooperating with universities and research institutes at home and abroad to train technical human resources to meet the increasing needs of the aluminum industry.

Dak Nong strives to become the national bauxite - alumina - aluminum industrial center by 2030, so it is in dire need of a high-quality workforce.

With its available potential and advantages, Dak Nong has a great opportunity to become the country's leading aluminum industrial center.

According to experts, when the aluminum industrial projects are completed and put into stable operation, Dak Nong will become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors, not only in the mining sector but also in supporting industries and deep processing industries.

On July 1, 2022, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien worked with Dak Nong province and directed that the province should focus on promoting the bauxite - alumina - aluminum mining complex project in accordance with the spirit of Conclusion No. 31-KL/TW, dated March 7, 2022 of the Politburo. This is an opportunity for Dak Nong to promote industrial development, especially the materials industry.
