Crowds storm Russian airport in search of Israelis

Crowds stormed an airport in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, searching for Israelis after hearing it was about to receive a flight from Israel.

Dozens of protesters, many shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great), broke down doors, climbed over barriers and stormed the runway at the airport in Makhachkala, Russia's Republic of Dagestan, on October 29.

Local media reported that a mob stormed the airport in Dagestan, searching for Jews and Israelis after hearing that a flight from Israel had landed there.

According to Flightradar, a Red Wings flight departing from Tel Aviv, Israel, landed in Makhachkala, Republic of Dagestan, on the evening of October 29. The flight transited in Makhachkala before flying to Moscow, Russia.

Authorities in the Republic of Dagestan later announced that the situation was under control and that the airport would be closed until November 6. Local health authorities said more than 20 people were injured in the incident.

Dagestan Republic leader Sergey Melikov condemned the crowd that stormed the airport and pledged to punish them.

"All Dagestani sympathize with the pain of the Palestinian victims and pray for peace . But what happened at the airport is outrageous and will face action from law enforcement agencies," Melikov posted on Telegram.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued a statement on the same day calling on Russia to protect Israeli citizens and all Jews.
