The Ho Chi Minh City World Cup is organized annually by the World Carom Billiards Association (UMB), rotating across different continents. Since its first event in 2015, although 2020 and 2021 had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ho Chi Minh City has become a familiar "destination" for excellent players. Vietnam has won this tournament twice with Tran Quyet Chien (2018) and Tran Duc Minh (2024).
On the opening day of May 19, the first qualifying round attracted the participation of 18 Vietnamese players. In Group A, the highlight was the competition between veteran Ly The Vinh and the beautiful female player from Greece - Litsa Mavridoglou, who came from pool and was a national champion. Although she has just switched to 3-cushion carom and has not made a clear mark, Litsa has participated in the 2024 Women's World Championship and many international tournaments against male players. In the same group is player Tran Quang Hung.
Not only Ly The Vinh, the first day also witnessed many exciting matches with the participation of Vietnamese players competing with unknown international opponents. In group B, Nguyen Nhu Le faced Mauricio Aguilar (Colombia) and Jorge Costa (Portugal).
Group F sees Nguyen Dinh Quoc face Osawa Takashi (Japan) and Lucas Egert (Denmark). In Group G, Ngo Le Duy will face Fahri Gunaydin (Türkiye) and Takamasa Hagiwara (Japan). Group H sees Dinh Quang Hai face Qian Jiale (China) and Aziz Kilicaslan (Türkiye).
Also attracting attention is the young player born in 2003 from An Giang , Nguyen Hoai Phong, who is participating in the World Cup for the first time and faces a big challenge when he is in group M with Henk Overmars (Netherlands) and Masayuki Sawaoka (Japan).
The first qualifying round will take place with 48 players divided into 16 groups, competing in a round-robin format, reaching 30 points. The top 16 players in each group will advance to the next round, promising attractive and fierce competition.
The 2025 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Billiards Carom World Cup is not only a sports tournament but also an opportunity for international players to exchange and affirm their talents on the world stage, contributing to raising the position of Vietnamese billiards.
