The Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) has launched an official investigation into allegations of match-fixing following the national team's 1-2 loss to Singapore at the 2024 AFF Cup on December 11, the Khmertimeskh newspaper reported.
Singapore 2-1 Cambodia
Suspicions of match-fixing arose after the Cambodian team conceded two quick goals in the first half following two mistakes by goalkeeper Vireak Dara.
During a meeting with the players and coaching staff of the Cambodian national team last Saturday, General Sao Sokha, President of the FFC and Commander-in-Chief of the National Military Police, said that the FFC has coordinated with the competent authorities to investigate and clarify all suspicions.
“Honest officials and players need not worry about their integrity,” he asserted.
Goalkeeper Dara made Cambodia concede 2 goals against Singapore
Some Cambodian football fans have accused goalkeeper Vireak Dara of match-fixing after he made two serious mistakes in Cambodia's 1-2 loss to Singapore.
Fans believe that if Dara had not made a mistake, the Cambodian team could have won and brought home 3 points.
Just eight minutes into the game, defender Nick Taylor attempted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Dara. The 21-year-old then attempted to clear the ball out of the area. However, he made a serious error, allowing the ball to slip through his legs. Singapore striker Muhammad Faris immediately seized the opportunity and scored.
The first mistake cost Dara his confidence. Six minutes later, he made another serious error when he tried to play the ball from his own half. Dara passed the ball to defender Ose Takaki on the right wing but accidentally created an opportunity for Singapore striker Muhammad Shawal to steal the ball and double the lead.
Mr. Sao Sokha, Chairman of FFC, met with the coaching staff and players of the Cambodian national team on December 14.
After the match, Cambodian football fans called on the FFC to urgently investigate goalkeeper Dara to determine whether the mistakes were intentional or not.
“ I hope the FFC will check and investigate whether the Cambodian goalkeeper intentionally conceded two consecutive goals. Did his or his relatives’ bank accounts increase abnormally? For Singapore to score two goals so quickly, there is a 70 to 90% chance of receiving bribes, ” a fan shared.
While some criticized goalkeeper Dara, others, including his teammates in the Cambodian national team, said the goalkeeper did not intentionally make the mistake.
“ It’s not over yet. There are still two important matches in the group stage. Every player fights and wants to win, but mistakes are common in football. I fully believe in and support Dara,” Cambodian player Nick Taylor wrote on his personal Facebook page.
