Toto Cutugno, Italian music legend and 1990 Eurovision winner, has died at the age of 80, at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan.
Best known for his 1983 global hit “L'Italiano,” the singer celebrated his 80th birthday in July.
His manager Danilo Mancuso said that “after a long illness, the singer's health has been deteriorating in recent months.”
Cutugno, born Salvatore, rose to international fame in 1983 when he performed the song “L'Italiano” at the Sanremo music festival in Italy - which is considered the inspiration for Eurovision.
The song reached number one on the music charts in Italy, France, Switzerland and Portugal. A cover version titled "I am a Finn" became a hit in Finland that same year.
When he was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Sanremo music festival in 2013, he performed the song L'Italiano with the Red Army Choir.
In 2007, Cutugno was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but recovered to compete in his final Sanremo competition in 2010.
In recent years, the male singer has almost withdrawn from social activities.
Many politicians and musicians in Italy have paid tribute to the singer following the news of his death.
“Farewell Toto, great conductor,” wrote singer Eros Ramazzotti. “We will miss you.”
