Vietnamese-American director invited to make film about rock legend Jimi Hendrix

After the big hit with the movie “The Greatest Night in Pop” Behind the scenes of the song “We are the world,” Director Bao Nguyen was invited to direct the film. “Jimi” about American blues rock legend Jimi Hendrix.

The late musician's half-sister, Janie Hendrix, said that his time in London was the most important period of Jimi's career and short life (27 years). "The social scene, the nightlife that came into the day, the relationships that were formed, the decisions about where he wanted his music to go, and where he wanted his music to go; all of that became the roadmap for his life," Janie shared with the press.

She believes in director Bao Nguyen and his experience through “The Greatest Night in Pop,” It is hoped that Jimi's experiences in London will provide useful information and inspiration for moviegoers.

Deadline quoted the Vietnamese-born director as saying that this was both a great honor and a great responsibility. Having lived in London for a while, Bao Nguyen called it a place rich in creativity and had a deep connection to the city, just like the character himself.

“I approached the project with a deep respect for his legacy and the cultural impact he created,” added Bao Nguyen. “Through the film, I hoped to capture the vibrant atmosphere of the 1960s and his meteoric rise to prominence through the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival—a triumphant homecoming where his explosive performances not only set his guitar ablaze, but also sparked a cultural shift that changed the course of world music history.”

Jimi Hendrix at Monterey Pop truly made history with his mesmerizing, mysterious music, and unprecedented guitar burning and smashing on stage. The Rolling Stones called Jimi Hendrix’s guitar playing wild and mischievous, and the show a “revelatory” and “exciting improvisations of jazz and R&B guitar.”

English-language newspapers quoted the producer as saying that the film will reveal rare archival photos and carefully selected and restored documentary footage.
