(NLDO) - A large medieval treasure has just been discovered by German workers while constructing a pipeline system.

According to Live Science, a group of workers were digging in the area called "Black Forest" in the town of Glottertal, Baden-Württemberg state - Germany to lay a pipeline when they discovered a treasure described as "glittering metal plates".

It was a hoard of medieval coins, consisting of more than 1,500 silver coins, of great value.

According to archaeologist Andreas Haasis-Berner from the State Office for Monuments Conservation in Stuttgart - the capital of Baden-Württemberg state, what has just been revealed in the Black Forest is the largest treasure trove in the region since 1949.

In addition to their value as centuries-old artifacts, the ancient coin hoard is also an important clue for archaeologists to understand mining and minting activities in this area 650 years ago.

"The Glottertal was one of the most important mining areas for the dukes of Freiburg. The site where the coins were found was the main settlement of miners," the archaeologists explained.

More specifically, the area once had large silver mines, where the raw material was extracted and then brought directly to mints built on site.

After cleaning and preliminary analysis, experts said the coins were minted in 1320.

Some were minted locally, but there were also coins from Switzerland and France mixed in with the treasure.

At the time the coins were minted, the entire hoard could have bought 150 sheep. Now, hundreds of years later and after a series of historical upheavals, the treasure is even more priceless.

Most importantly, the authors say, this latest discovery sheds light on Glottertal's medieval history and economy .

The mixture of coins from many places shows a wide circulation of ancient money, synonymous with a bustling trade network.
