Knee pain in young people is often caused by overexertion or injury, but can also be a warning sign of diseases such as arthritis or patellofemoral syndrome.
Master, Doctor, Doctor Dao Duy An Duy, Orthopedic Trauma Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that knee pain in young people can be caused by many reasons, so the symptoms and treatment methods are different. Below are some common causes.
Sports injuries such as torn knee cartilage, torn knee ligaments, knee tendonitis, synovitis, patellar dislocation... Each injury has different symptoms, but in general, the patient feels knee pain and difficulty walking.
Patellar tendinopathy is an imbalance in the muscles that support and move the knee joint. Weak thigh muscles or over-tightening of the muscles and tendons around the knee can change the way the knee functions, creating areas of tension and stress inside the knee joint.
Over time, these areas can become irritated and inflamed, causing pain around the kneecap and in front of the knee. At this time, the patient feels pain or stiffness in the knee when kneeling, squatting, climbing stairs...

Sinding-Larsen Johansson syndrome is a condition of inflammation, pain and discomfort at the end of the kneecap, cartilage damage; causing stiffness in the knee joint, difficulty maintaining balance and abnormal gait. The injury occurs due to repetitive contraction of the thigh muscles over a long period of time.
Tibial tuberosity enthesitis causes pain about 2.5 cm below the kneecap. This condition is more common in men and is often caused by overuse of the thigh muscles. Common symptoms include pain above the tibial tuberosity, which is worse during or immediately after activity, reduced range of motion, gait changes, and difficulty maintaining balance.
Juvenile arthritis is a type of rheumatoid arthritis that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee joint. The patient limps in the early morning and has reduced ability to bear weight in the affected leg. The disease is common in obese people who frequently turn, run, or do other vigorous movements.

According to Dr. Duy, most cases of knee pain in young people can be treated conservatively by combining local care, medication and physical therapy. However, patients should not be subjective, they should see a doctor early if there are any unusual signs. From there, the doctor will have an appropriate treatment regimen, avoiding serious consequences for the patient. If conservative measures are not effective, the pain becomes more severe, there are many soft tissue tears, the injury causes bone fractures, affecting daily activities, the patient may need surgery.
To avoid knee pain due to injury or overuse, Dr. Duy recommends that people wear appropriate shoes and protective gear when exercising. Exercise properly and systematically, always warm up and do cool-down exercises after exercise. Practice yoga or appropriate stretching to keep the knee muscles flexible and strong. Avoid activities that cause or aggravate knee pain.
