The project “A New Life for Waste – A new life cycle for waste” was implemented from March to May 2025 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to raise awareness about plastic waste among young people, and at the same time recycle plastic waste into useful products to give to disadvantaged students.
The project involved more than 3,700 students and teachers from 6 secondary schools: Ngo Si Lien, Nam Tu Liem, Nguyen Du, Quang Trung, Nguyen Truong To (Hanoi) and Binh Hoa (Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City). The activities were coordinated between GNI and the schools, creating a positive ripple effect in the school community.

The project consists of two phases: providing knowledge and practicing plastic waste classification. In the first phase, students learn about plastic waste pollution, the classification process and participate in activities such as flag-raising activities, classroom communication, and thematic workshops. In the second phase, students practice sorting waste at source, compete in weekly plastic waste collection and decorate the waste collection area with environmental protection messages.
In particular, the Children's Environmental Club was established in schools to maintain the movement, spread green actions and guide friends to join. After 3 months, more than 1,000 kg of clean plastic waste was collected. This waste was recycled into keychains and 60 sets of student desks and chairs and will be donated to a school in the GNI project area at the beginning of the next semester.

Sharing at the event, Trinh Anh Nhi, a student of class 7A3, Ngo Si Lien Secondary School, said: “Before, I thought garbage was just something to be thrown away. After the project, I understood that if I knew how to classify and process it, garbage could become a useful resource. I learned many new skills such as teamwork, presentation and critical thinking. Those skills have helped us become 'green ambassadors', spreading the message of environmental protection to our families and communities."
"The more we participate, the more we feel like we are not alone because there are many other friends who are also interested and willing to act for the environment. And then, we started to want to become part of a larger group, where the green living spirit is spread even more strongly," Anh Nhi shared more.
