High school literature exam has many new points, students "memorize" the secret to getting good scores

(Dan Tri) - In 2025, students will take the high school graduation exam with many new points due to the application of the 2018 general education program. Some teachers share tips on "overcoming difficulties" when taking the high school graduation exam in literature.

Accumulate more materials outside of textbooks

At the previous conference, Prof. Dr. Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Department of Quality Management ( Ministry of Education and Training ) said that the high school graduation exam from 2025 will not only test knowledge but also focus more on assessing the ability to apply knowledge into practice.

The 2025 exam has a ratio of 4:3:3 for questions at the levels of knowledge, understanding, and application. It can be seen that a ratio of knowledge and understanding of about 70% will be inclined towards the goal of graduation, while a ratio of understanding and application of about 60% will have a good differentiation effect for admission purposes.

A notable new point is that the literature subject may use materials other than textbooks when constructing the exam. This helps assess students' ability to read, understand and perceive texts in real-life situations, avoiding rote learning or mechanical memorization. Materials may include passages, poems, or situations related to current events and social life.

Regarding this, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dau, a literature teacher at Thuong Cat High School, Hanoi , said that in the process of guiding students to practice social argumentation, she realized that many students were still weak in answering questions at the comprehension and application level, and did not fully understand the structure of the test.

"Teachers need to build a clear model essay framework, specifically separating the criteria that need to be achieved in each part. Thanks to that, students can rely on it to orient their writing, ensure enough ideas and present more coherently," Ms. Dau shared.

This teacher also advised students to refer to more reputable documents to expand their evidence base for social argumentative essays, and at the same time accumulate more materials to improve their ability to deeply and comprehensively evaluate issues in the literature exam.

For the literary essay section, Ms. Dau emphasized that ensuring the structure of the essay is still the key factor. Students need to deeply analyze the content and artistic details, and at the same time know how to relate the text to real life to clarify the issue.

Do not abuse practice questions.

Commenting on the new points of this year's exam, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Departmentof Education Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training), said that this year's high school graduation exam will have differentiated questions requiring solutions to practical problems.

Therefore, during the review process, for any content that can be related to reality, students need to get used to reasoning and learning in order to meet the requirements of the exam well.

This expert believes that this year's high school graduation exam closely follows the high school education program, mainly the content of the 12th grade program and the content that continues from grades 10, 11 to grade 12. Differentiating questions will be those that require students to relate to reality and solve practical life problems.

Professor Ha advises students to practice deductive thinking and make connections with reality during their review to take advantage of the opportunity to score points in this group of questions.

Ms. Tran Hai Yen, a literature teacher at Nam Ly High School, Ha Nam, said that the 2025 high school graduation exam is a big challenge for teachers, parents and especially students because it is the first time candidates take the exam according to the new general education program (2018 general education program), so reviewing is difficult and confusing because everything is quite new.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dau said that in the exam stage, practicing questions to get familiar with the types of questions is necessary, but students should not overdo it, leading to overload.

When correcting your essay, you need to carefully review your mistakes and learn from them to avoid repeating them in future essays. "In particular, each essay needs to ensure that it has all the necessary components such as thesis, points, analysis and evidence - these are the basic elements that help the essay be clear, have depth and achieve optimal scores," Ms. Dau noted.

This teacher believes that the new language program aims to develop students’ qualities and language skills. Therefore, students must not only understand but also analyze, perceive and present coherently, and accumulate points from the smallest things to help them do well on the exam.
