On March 5, the Vietnam Railway Authority informed that the consulting unit (Joint Venture of Transport Consulting and Construction Joint Stock Company and Transport Design Consulting Corporation - JSC) has just completed the mid-term report on the planning of the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh railway route to 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Accordingly, the research scope for planning this railway line has a total length of 441.90 km, the starting point is Lao Cai station (from the point of connection with the Chinese railway) and the end point is Ha Long station (belonging to the Kep - Ha Long railway line) and the route sections pass through 10 provinces/cities (Lao Cai, Yen Bai , Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh).
On the route, there are about 56 large bridges with a length of 47.5 km crossing large rivers such as the Red River, Lo River, Bach Dang River and overpasses on expressways such as Hanoi - Lao Cai, Hanoi - Hai Phong, Hai Phong - Quang Ninh, national highways and some branch roads. There are 11 tunnels with a length of 10.05 km.
Based on the forecast of large-volume freight and passenger transport demand, along with the Vietnam-China international transport route, the consultant recommends planning the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh railway line as a single track in the short term and a double track in the long term. The 1,435 mm standard gauge railway line will run a mixture of freight and passengers at a design speed of 160 - 200 km/h.
According to the consultant, the proposed route, as well as the starting and ending points of the route, the location, function and scale of the stations have been basically agreed upon by the localities. Regarding the stations, there are a total of 41 stations, specifically 5 stations for trains: Lao Cai, Yen Thuong, Nam Hai Phong, Ha Long and Cai Lan. Of which, Lao Cai station also serves as an international transit station, Ha Long station only operates passenger trains and Cai Lan station only operates freight trains; Yen Thuong station (Hanoi) is studying and proposing option 1 as a station for passenger and freight trains for the Northern railway lines with a gauge of 1,435 mm, option 2 as a station only for freight trains for the Northern lines with a gauge of 1,435 mm.
There are 5 intermediate stations with passenger and cargo operations concentrated in provincial and city centers: Yen Bai, Viet Tri, Vinh Phuc, Lac Dao, Hai Duong. 4 port stations serving loading and unloading for seaports: Lach Huyen, Nam Do Son, Nam Dinh Vu, Dinh Vu port stations.
There are 27 train-passenger stations (with passenger and cargo operations serving nearby residents): Thai Nien (new), Son Ha, Cam Con, Bao Ha (new), Chau Que Thuong, Dong An, Tan Hop, Yen Hop, Y Can, Lenh Khanh, Ha Hoa, Thanh Ba, Phu Tho, Lap Thach, Binh Xuyen, Phuc Yen, Thach Loi, Bac Hong, Dong Anh, Trung Mau, Luong Tai, Binh Giang, Tu Ky, Tan Vien, Phong Hai, Quang Yen, Minh Khai.
Regarding the technology of the above railway line, the consultant proposed to choose the electrification method. Because the important goal of this line is to connect the rails and have the ability to connect vehicles (locomotives, cars/trains), compatible with the 1,435 mm gauge electrified railway line of Kunming - Hekou North of China. More specifically, the electrification solution is the type of single-phase AC electricity, contact voltage: 25 kVAC, industrial frequency 50 Hz; power supply method: overhead contact line. The consultant estimated that the entire line would need to install about 50 new autotransformer (AT) stations.
