The world of music is so vast, how do we know which music to "see" and which music to "listen to" so that we can use it as a guide to avoid getting lost? Because music must also follow the dualistic law of this physical world. There is good, there is bad. Sacred - profane. Bright - dark. Beautiful - crude. Gentle - dramatic. Tonal - atonal.
The golden age of domestic and international music
I remember a time when I was a teenager, the whole group gathered around to listen to the cassette player. At that time, there was no concept of classical music. I only knew that there was a man named Paul Mauriat who specialized in arranging classical music into extremely attractive arrangements. Paul Mauriat's arrangements were extremely tight, with concise sentences and valuable combinations of tones. It can be said that my path to mixing and arranging was first influenced by Paul Mauriat's cassette tapes.
Then from the 1980s - 1990s and the following decades, domestic and international music was a brilliant golden age. And also at that time, coffee shops specializing in collecting and selecting international music cassettes and CDs formed a coffee culture to enjoy beautiful music, which is hard to repeat in this era of abundant digital music! Our coffee sessions were spent listening to ABBA, Boney M, Air Supply, Eagles, Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd... and then analyzing each sentence, harmony, melody... After the Paul Mauriat cassettes, the quintessence of world pop and rock music of the 1980s - 1990s permeated my soul.
Also during this time, if we do not mention the golden age of the generation of Vietnamese musicians, with names like: Thanh Tung, Tu Huy, Nguyen Duc Trung, Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Tran Tien... then we cannot fully understand what I "chosen and listened to" to become the person I am today. Not to mention before that was the music of the Phuong Hoang group, the music of Pham Duy, Van Cao, Trinh Cong Son... A generation of fathers, uncles and seniors with music of enthusiasm, beauty, positivity, and the quest for human life. No slogans, no slogans. Just beauty and goodness: Love song, Dream stream, Let the wind take you away, Singing with the little cicada, Oh Beloved Life, My Childhood Homeland, Little Sun, Sparkling Dewdrops ...
Then, from the moment I entered the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, the world of classical music began to open up, more detailed, more vast, like a mesmerizing galaxy in the night sky. I was overwhelmed by the works of genius musicians that I always wondered how they could create such beautiful music? Perhaps the Creator chose them, through them to bring salvation to humanity? Bach's holy preludes, fugues, canons. Beethoven's tragic music. Mozart's purity. Chopin's romantic world with beautiful sadness. Liszt's fascinating music. Debusy's magical realms, Stravinsky's. And the rolling music of Rachmaninov, Prokofiev...
Once I read a book about a priest who died for 90 minutes in a car accident. During that time, he entered the realm of Heaven. And what overwhelmed me was that the music there sounded like classical music, but it was a million times better, which I had no way to describe with the current language limitations.
Yes! That is why classical music is such a core spiritual value for mankind. And I believe it is a revelation! When the Creator created mankind, besides the three layers of mind - spirit - body, classical music was the tonic that God gave to soothe, calm and guide the human soul in the dualistic matrix where a lifetime must endure the terrible pressure of the collision of two opposites.
Don't believe me, try listening to Gabriel Fauré's Sicillienne Op.78 , Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Lied! It's so beautiful it will instantly purify your soul!
The problem is not just inviting music experts into schools to teach children, but what to teach them? Classical music! That is the salvation. PHOTO: VO THIEN THANH
I know in today's music world, it's not easy to "pay attention to what you see, pay attention to what you hear, pay attention to what you read, pay attention to where you go". Look at the world of online digital music streaming sites, in the near future you won't be able to distinguish which music comes from AI, which comes from the human soul. Because humans are becoming more and more like AI. And AI is imitating humans more and more. The coexistence of AI and humans is inevitable! This makes the already chaotic matrix even more chaotic.
Stay Awake in the Modern Music Matrix
In the not-too-distant future, you won't be able to tell which music comes from AI and which comes from the human soul. PHOTO: VTT
So in that chaotic matrix, what can we find to listen to, to read, to see? Fortunately! The pages of the teachers' books are still there. Classical music, the revelation of the Creator are still there. The immortal treasures of pop and rock music of humanity have become sediments and are still there. They have a sign to recognize: they are full of love, compassion and most importantly, they always inherit classical music.
Think of the legendary group ABBA and their music! And Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody ! They are steeped in classical music. It is easy to see why their music is immortal. There is no genre of music that is not somehow related to classical music. Therefore, the more steeped in classical music, the more beautiful, profound and benevolent your work will be. The more steeped in classical music, the more society will know how to choose right from wrong in the musical matrix of the chaotic world. And so, the problem is not just inviting music experts into schools to teach children, but what to teach them? Classical music! That is the salvation!
You are walking in the matrix of the modern technological music world. That is obvious, because evolution is endless, and sometimes it is a regressive evolution. Because the deeper we sink into the material world and technological games, the more we lose our sacred art, the further away from our true self. How can we find a beautiful Rachmanivov Piano Concerto No.2 version 2.0, or a legendary ABBA in a time when the human mind is in chaos? Therefore, the newest things are not necessarily good, the old things are not necessarily outdated! Because they were born in a time when love was still abundant. Because they are core values and classics. Classical music and the treasure trove of pop and rock music from the 1980s and 1990s are proof! Stay alert and walk in the matrix of modern music.
What kind of music do you make, new or old? It doesn't matter. What matters is that the music is the right genre, and it's authentically from your soul, along with direct communication with the people around you. For example, do you get bored listening to Besame Mucho again ? Not at all! Is I Have A Dream still good? Still great. Because it's simply the root of beauty! As the soul of the legendary ABBA band, Benny Andersson, just said: "The difference between an AI work and a human work is that it doesn't have a direct interactive connection between human love in life".
We need coffee chats, we need handshakes with real warmth. Not 'likes' on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. Don't follow the trend too much or you will quickly disappear in the matrix of modern music.
