Dr. Nguyen Dai Vinh - Director of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Da Nang City said that according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health , the Chikungunya epidemic is currently on the rise, with major outbreaks recorded in Indian Ocean islands such as La Réunion and Mayotte.
CDC Da Nang is strengthening medical quarantine and communication and Chikungunya epidemic prevention at border gates.
In Vietnam, there have been no reports from localities about cases of Chikungunya. However, Aedes mosquitoes (vectors that transmit the disease) are at their peak, with high mosquito density in many places; during the summer, many tourists travel to and from Vietnam. From there, there is a high risk of this disease entering our country and spreading rapidly in the community.
As an international trade gateway, Da Nang is at high risk of disease intrusion. Currently, on average, there are more than 850 vehicles entering and exiting the city through the international airport and seaport gates each week with about 150,000 passengers from many countries, including places with Chikungunya cases such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Thailand, etc.
Therefore, the Da Nang Department of Health has requested to strengthen medical quarantine at the border gate, closely monitor passengers, vehicles, and imported goods, especially from epidemic areas. At the same time, deploy surveillance of disease-carrying mosquitoes, kill mosquitoes, and eliminate larvae/wigglers in the border gate area and border communities.
When detecting a suspected case, it is necessary to inform and coordinate with preventive health agencies at all levels to conduct epidemiological investigations, collect samples for testing, and handle epidemics at medical facilities. Fully report the epidemic situation according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health for timely diagnosis.
In order to implement the above directive, CDC Da Nang has strengthened medical quarantine and epidemic surveillance at medical facilities and in the community. At border gates, medical quarantine forces are deployed 24/7. The remote body temperature measuring system combined with direct monitoring and observation of health status helps to detect early passengers with suspicious signs such as fever, rash or joint pain.
These cases will be epidemiologically investigated, temporarily isolated and transferred to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment. In parallel with passenger monitoring, strict inspection and supervision of international means of transport will also be strengthened, especially those departing or transiting from areas with epidemics or areas at risk of disease vectors.
To effectively control the epidemic, CDC Da Nang also requested the Regional Health Centers to closely monitor the situation, especially monitoring cases with suspected symptoms (high fever, joint pain, headache, fatigue and rash) at medical facilities and in the community, especially those with a history of traveling from epidemic areas within 12 days.
