The Information quoted a source close to the matter as saying that Apple's streaming service is losing more than $1 billion a year.

Since launching its Apple TV+ streaming service in 2019, tech giant Apple has spent more than $5 billion a year on content, but cut that spending by about $500 million last year.

Despite its popularity with original shows like Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Severance, Apple TV+ lags behind rivals Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video in terms of subscriber numbers.

According to the latest figures, Netflix has 301.63 million subscribers, Disney+ has 124.6 million users and Warner Bros Discovery has 116.9 million users.

Apple does not disclose the number of Apple TV+ subscribers, but according to five analysts at financial data analysis firm Visible Alpha, the number is estimated to reach 40.4 million by the end of 2024.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said during an earnings call in January that Apple TV+ products had received more than 2,500 nominations and 538 awards.

With competition in the streaming industry intensifying, media companies are increasingly bundling their services at a discounted price to attract consumers. Apple TV+ is part of a bundle offered by Comcast that bundles it with Peacock and Netflix for $15 a month. Apple TV+ alone costs $9.99 a month in the US.

Apple also bundles Apple TV+ with other services like iCloud and Apple Music under the Apple One program.

In February, Apple announced plans to invest up to $500 billion in the US economy over the next four years, including building an Artificial Intelligence (AI) server factory in Texas and creating about 20,000 new jobs in research and development (R&D).

The news comes after a meeting between Cook and President Donald Trump. According to Apple’s official announcement, the massive investment will cover a range of areas, from purchasing from US suppliers to producing original TV shows and movies for the Apple TV+ service.

The move is seen as a boost for the US economy and a reassurance to the Trump administration. In the context that many Apple products, assembled in China, may face the risk of being subject to a 10% import tax from the Trump administration, Apple's investment plan is assessed by analysts to ease concerns and demonstrate Apple's commitment to the US market./.
