Last year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park welcomed 13 million visitors; while more than 3 million people admired the rocky desert landscapes and vegetation of Joshua Tree National Park.

More than 300 million visitors explored America's national parks last year, from Acadia in Maine to Zion in Utah.

According to National Geographic, since the US National Park Service (NPS) began keeping records in 1904, more than 16 billion people have visited the country's vast mountain landscapes, coastal wildernesses, and deserts.

Some of the most popular parks saw record attendance last year.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the North Carolina-Tennessee border, has welcomed 13 million visitors; while more than 3 million people have seen the rocky desert landscapes and vegetation of Joshua Tree National Park in California.

Visitors are drawn to the vastness and diversity of America's great natural formations. From sea to sea (and the wilderness of Alaska and Hawaii), the 85 million acres of NPS include 150,000 miles of rivers and streams and more than 21,000 miles of trails.

These 10 parks are the “superstars” of the NPS system of 429 parks, including 63 national parks.

Olympic National Park

In 2023, more than 2.9 million people visited Washington State's Olympic National Park. The park encompasses 922,651 acres (373,000ha) of pristine Pacific coastline, rugged glacial mountains, and pristine temperate rainforest.

Joshua Tree National Park

Drawn by its massive boulders and distinctive yucca brevifolia (Joshua trees), 3,270,404 visitors visited Joshua Tree National Park in 2023. It offers hiking and stargazing in the Sonora and Mojave deserts east of Los Angeles, California.

Grand Teton National Park

The peaks of the Teton Range are majestic and imposing, rising nearly 7,000 feet above the Wyoming valley floor, making them one of the most daring geological formations in the Rockies. The jewel-like lakes, blue and white glaciers, and bare granite peaks of Grand Teton National Park attracted 3,417,106 visitors in 2023.

Acadia National Park

Where the ocean meets the mountains, Acadia National Park in Maine welcomed 3,879,890 visitors last year. Much of the park is located on Mount Desert Island, a mosaic of parkland and riverside villages.

Yosemite National Park

Nearly 4 million visitors came to this park of granite cliffs and towering waterfalls in 2023. Most people spent time in Yosemite Valley, a mile-wide (1.6km), seven-mile-long (11km) canyon split by a river and widened and deepened by glacial activity.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Immense mountain scenery drew 4.1 million visitors to Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park last year. The park has 150 lakes and 450 miles (725km) of streams, with ecosystems ranging from wetlands to pine forests, tundra and alpine tundra.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park – the world’s first national park – welcomed 4.5 million visitors in 2023. The vast reserve – covering 2.2 million acres (890,000ha) in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana – features craggy peaks, raging geysers, alpine lakes, deep forests and an abundance of wildlife. The stars here are bison, bears, sheep, elk and wolves.

Zion National Park

Rising from the Utah highlands, the Virgin River flows through Zion Canyon into the desert below. Zion National Park's dramatic vertical terrain, with its rock towers, sandstone canyons and jagged cliffs, is expected to attract 5 million visitors by 2023.

Grand Canyon National Park

In 2023, Grand Canyon National Park attracted 4.7 million people to see one of the largest canyons on Earth, which is a mile (1.6km) deep and up to 18 miles (29km) wide in some spots. Visitors can explore the area by hiking, muling or rafting on the mighty Colorado River.

Visitors can explore the area's misty peaks and waterfall-filled valleys via scenic highways that wind through the mountains, or by hiking more than 800 miles (nearly 1,300km) of trails across North Carolina and Tennessee./.
