RT quoted local officials as saying that the Louvre museum was temporarily closed on October 19 after a theft occurred.
French Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed on X network that: "A robbery took place at the Louvre Museum in the morning after the museum opened to visitors." Minister Dati added that no one was injured and police were investigating the incident.
Several hooded criminals broke into the art museum through a building where the work was being built, then used a freight elevator to enter a room in the Apollo Gallery, which houses part of France's historic royal jewelry collection, Le Parisien newspaper reported, citing a preliminary investigation.
The thieves are believed to have stolen nine pieces of jewelry from the Napoleonic collection, including a necklace, a brooch, a tiara and several other items, according to the newspaper. However, the 140-carat Regent diamond, estimated to be worth more than $60 million, is believed to have remained intact.

One of the stolen items, which appears to be the crown of Empress Eugenie, wife of Emperor Napoleon III, was found outside the museum, Le Parisien newspaper added.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told reporters that the entire heist took just seven minutes, meaning the criminals were clearly well-prepared. He added that "museums in France are very vulnerable".
The last major theft from the Louvre was in 1983, when two Renaissance-era helmets and armor were stolen. They were recovered in Belgium in 2021.
