Adjusting the planning of Gia Binh airport over 1,900 hectares, the largest in the North

(NLDO) - The Ministry of Construction has just issued a decision approving the adjustment of the Gia Binh International Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Accordingly, Gia Binh International Airport ( Bac Ninh province) has the location and function of an international airport, used for both civil and security and defense purposes.

The planning target for the 2021-2030 period is a 4E airport (according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization -ICAO). Capacity is about 30 million passengers/year and 1.6 million tons of cargo/year; operating B777, B787, A350, A321 and other special and special-purpose aircraft.

Gia Binh International Airport has CAT III standard landing approach for runway 07L/25R, CAT II standard for runway 07R/25L.

Vision to 2050, the port will reach airport level 4E (according to ICAO standard code), with a capacity of about 50 million passengers/year and 2.5 million tons of cargo/year; operate B777, B787, A350, A321 and other special and specialized aircraft and have landing approaches: According to CAT III standards for runways 07L/25R, 07R/25L and 06/24.

Land use demand for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 of Gia Binh International Airport is about 1,959.95 hectares, of which, land planned for civil aviation works is about: 957.65 hectares; land planned for shared airport works is about: 927.23 hectares; security land managed by the Ministry of Public Security is about 75.07 hectares.

The Ministry of Construction assigns the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to be responsible for studying and accepting the Appraisal Report of the Department of Planning and Finance to complete the Planning dossier; Preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province and relevant agencies to organize the announcement, management and implementation of the planning according to regulations.

The Ministry also requested the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province to be responsible for reviewing and updating the above planning contents into the local planning and related planning; organizing the management of airspace and construction elevation according to regulations; researching solutions for electricity supply, water supply, drainage, etc. for the area near the airport.

At the same time, arrange and protect land funds in accordance with the approved planning, have plans for planning and land use to ensure that land funds are ready to meet the needs of expansion according to the planning; proactively coordinate with the Ministry of National Defense to research and arrange land funds for air defense positions to protect airports.

In addition, the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province completed the planning and investment in the traffic route connecting the airport with Hanoi capital, the main road to the airport to ensure the exploitation and connection capacity of Gia Binh International Airport.

With this decision, Gia Binh airport has been officially approved to become the airport with the largest area in the North, larger than Noi Bai airport (1,500 hectares). Gia Binh airport's capacity is equivalent to Noi Bai airport: The expected design capacity is about 30 million passengers/year in the period 2021-2030; about 50 million passengers/year with a vision to 2050.

Gia Binh airport construction started on August 19, 2025

At a recent working session, Vice Chairman of Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee Dao Quang Khai emphasized that Gia Binh International Airport Project is a national key project, receiving special attention from the Party, State, National Assembly, and Government. The project welcomes APEC - 2027 and has a driving force to contribute to promoting socio-economic development and growth of the province in the coming period.

Therefore, the direction of the Central and the province is to mobilize the participation of the entire political system, "running and lining up at the same time", with many specific policies for implementation; determined to start the Gia Binh International Airport Project on August 19, 2025.
