Investigate, trace the origin, and clarify the cause of suspected food poisoning

According to information from the Phu Yen Department of Health, the department is coordinating with relevant agencies to investigate, trace the origin of suspected food, and verify the cause of the suspected food poisoning incident that occurred on June 3.

Previously, from 7:00 to 9:30 on June 3, the Department of Internal Medicine - Pediatrics - Infectious Diseases - Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning of Dong Hoa Town Medical Center received 7 patients suspected of food poisoning with symptoms: severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea... These 7 patients reside in Hoa Hiep Trung Ward, Hoa Thanh Commune and Hoa Tan Dong Commune (Dong Hoa Town); the oldest is 41 years old, the youngest is 14 years old. At 5:00 p.m. on June 2, they ate at a restaurant in Ward 7 (Tuy Hoa City), then showed symptoms of food poisoning. Of the 7 patients, 5 have been discharged from the hospital; 2 are continuing to be monitored and treated at Dong Hoa Town Medical Center, their health is temporarily stable.

Immediately after receiving the report, the Department of Health coordinated with Tuy Hoa City Medical Center, Dong Hoa Town Medical Center and Ward 7 People's Committee (Tuy Hoa City) to monitor and investigate the cause of the food poisoning incident. The Department of Health established a team to inspect the compliance with food safety regulations at P.D.PY Company Limited - P.D.V III Restaurant.

The inspection team noted: The facility has not presented invoices or the origin of food ingredients. There are insects and harmful animals (flies) in the processing, trading and storage areas; there is no guarantee to prevent cross-contamination between unprocessed and processed foods in the kitchen layout; the legal regulations on the 3-step food inspection regime are not followed properly; the legal regulations on food sample storage are not followed properly; the sewers and drains in the kitchen area are stagnant; there are no tools to collect and contain garbage and waste in a hygienic manner.

The inspection team requested the facility to temporarily suspend operations until the above-mentioned shortcomings and limitations are overcome.

The Department of Health has also requested specialized units to strengthen food safety supervision and food poisoning prevention.
