8 people were trafficked to Myanmar after falling into the trap of "free travel to Thailand"

A group of eight people from Taiwan (China) took a budget flight from Taoyuan Airport to Bangkok late last year. But shortly after arriving in Bangkok, they were taken to Myanmar.

Liberty Times recently reported on a cross-border scam using the "free trip to Thailand" gimmick.

Eight people in Taiwan, including Ms. Tran, fell for the scammers' lure and flew from Taoyuan Airport to Bangkok via a low-cost airline. However, immediately after landing in Bangkok, they were taken to the scam area in Myawaddy City, Myanmar.

According to Ms. Tran and two other elderly victims, after the eight were taken to detention in Myanmar, the group had strict division of labor and Chinese people in charge of guarding them. If they spoke Taiwanese or showed dissatisfaction, they would be beaten, scolded, and threatened.

The ringleader then began to “interview” the five young men in the tour group at the office. Meanwhile, he told the three elderly women directly, “We just want money,” and informed them that they would have to pay NT$300,000 each in ransom to be released.

The three elderly victims rushed to contact their families in Taiwan to collect the money, while the five young men were taken to the scam site within three days, despite also contacting their families to collect the ransom.

Ms. Tran and two other elderly victims returned to Taiwan after paying the ransom.

Five young men were forced to participate in a cryptocurrency investment scam, sometimes making video calls to trick foreigners. They had to achieve a "KPI" of $500,000 to be released. Their mobile phones were confiscated to prevent them from being tracked and transmitted.

During this time, a young man secretly brought a mobile phone provided by the scammers back to the dormitory and was discovered while calling his girlfriend in Taiwan. The young man was immediately locked in a dark room, beaten, deprived of food and water, and threatened that "if he committed the same offense again, he would be buried alive". To date, there has been no news of these five victims.

"It turns out that when we took the photos and posted them on Telegram at Taoyuan Airport, we were already sold," said Ms. Tran, advising people to be more vigilant: "As long as you haven't boarded the plane, you still have a chance to escape. Don't believe in any high-paying jobs that fall from the sky or 'free travel' tricks, otherwise the consequences will be terrible."
