At 38 years old, Novak Djokovic continues to challenge limits by becoming the oldest male tennis player to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams in one season.
After a quarterfinal win over Taylor Fritz, the Serbian legend has some time to rest before facing a young Carlos Alcaraz, hungry for revenge, in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the final quarter-final ended this morning when Sinner booked his place in the semi-finals against Canadian Auger-Aliassime.
Now the tennis world is looking forward to the most attractive match and considered the fiercest rival of the year - Alcaraz and Sinner, the final pair at the two most recent Grand Slam tournaments, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Faced with that expectation, Djokovic understands that the path to conquering the 25th Grand Slam will likely have to go through the world's top two players, starting with Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
"Everyone is looking forward to a dream final, but I will try to disrupt that plan," Djokovic affirmed.
The Serbian is 5-3 in the head-to-heads, including two recent important victories: the Australian Open quarterfinals and the Olympic final, where he completed the career "Golden Slam".
"I will definitely not raise the white flag on the court. I have been in another Grand Slam semi-final this year, with the highest stability at the major tournaments. This is what I set a goal for from the beginning of the season "playing my best at the Grand Slam". Now I have an opportunity, a challenge. Hopefully I am fit and in good shape to compete with Carlos (Alcaraz)" - Djokovic added.
However, Alcaraz has been in scintillating form at the US Open, winning five straight rounds without dropping a set. The 22-year-old admitted his desire to "pay back" his defeat to Djokovic and showed mental maturity after previous setbacks.
With his new haircut, focused and aggressive style of play, Alcaraz promises to bring a real challenge to Djokovic. This semi-final is not only a confrontation between two generations, but also could shape the balance of power in the world tennis village.
In the final quarter-final match this morning, Sinner won the last ticket to the semi-finals and will meet Felix Auger-Aliassime. Meanwhile, the remaining semi-final match is the match between Djokovic and Alcaraz, promising to bring a great battle that the entire tennis world is waiting for.
