The French Open is a tournament in the BWF's Super 750 series and one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments, taking place towards the end of the year.
Nhat Nguyen, the 25-year-old Irish tennis player of Vietnamese descent, won his opening match against strong opponent Lakshya Sen from India.
Interestingly, just last week, Nhat Nguyen lost to Sen 1-2 at the Denmark Open. At the tournament in France, the Vietnamese-born player had perfect "revenge," winning easily 21-7, 21-16.
This is a significant victory that promises to help Nhat Nguyen gain more points on the BWF rankings. Sen is currently ranked 19th in the world , 9 places higher than Nhat Nguyen.
Earlier in mid-September, the Vietnamese-born player also made a name for himself at the China Masters when he defeated Loh Kean Yew – a top 10 world ranked opponent – in the first round.
By defeating Sen, Nhat Nguyen has a very high chance of advancing further, because his opponent in the second round of the tournament is only the young Indonesian player Alwi Farhan.
Farhan also caused a major upset at the tournament by defeating the 7th seed Lanier. The winner of the match between Farhan and Nhat Nguyen will likely be Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the Thai player currently ranked 3rd in the world.
Winning consecutive Super 750 races is a major step forward in Nhat Nguyen's career. In the first half of 2025, he will mostly be competing in Super 300 races and below.
Nhat Nguyen was born in Hanoi . His family emigrated to Ireland when he was 6 years old, and by the age of 17, he was eligible to play for the European country.
In 2016, Nhat Nguyen's name began to be known when he won the gold medal at the European U17 Championships. Shortly after, the Vietnamese-born tennis player became the Irish champion.
Over the next few years, Nhat Nguyen developed his career in both men's singles and men's doubles, before focusing on men's singles from the age of 20.
