In response to the need for educational reform in accordance with Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in educational development, the Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training requires educational institutions to innovate teaching methods and promote STEM education and artificial intelligence (AI) in the 2025-2026 school year.

Students from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students are practicing in the STEM education lab.

Just over a month after its opening, the STEM education practice room at Lam Son High School for the Gifted – a project funded by the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Corporation ( Petrovietnam ) – has seen many vibrant and groundbreaking activities in hands-on education.

The largest of the 100 classrooms supported by Petrovietnam for schools nationwide, the STEM education practice room at Lam Son High School for the Gifted, costing a total of 3.3 billion VND to build, is equipped with six functional blocks: facilities, processing machinery and specialized equipment; tools and equipment for thematic learning; smart connected learning materials; a hard copy and soft copy learning materials system; and a system of records for organization and management.

After its inauguration and commissioning, not only were students excited to learn and create directly, but the teaching staff were also very enthusiastic and proud to have access to this advanced educational program that connects theory with practice. Ms. Doan Thi Thu Hang, a teacher at the school, said: “The STEM Innovation Petrovietnam lab has created a strong impetus for the school to accelerate the digital transformation process, modernize facilities, and innovate teaching methods. The STEM education lab will be where students conduct experiments on science and technology projects; implement a club activity model with many diverse activity groups, aiming to support students in pursuing in-depth research and creative projects. To maximize the effectiveness of the lab, the school will organize training sessions to help teachers apply STEM to interdisciplinary teaching.”

At Ham Rong High School, the STEM education practice room, funded by Petrovietnam, is also equipped with advanced experimental equipment, technology, and simulations, providing students with an environment for experience, creativity, and the implementation of scientific projects. This is an important step in improving the quality of teaching and learning, contributing to nurturing a passion for science and technology and guiding students to become global citizens.

Mr. Thieu Anh Duong, Principal of Ham Rong High School, shared: “The handover of the STEM education practice room is a favorable condition for teachers and students to improve the overall quality of education, develop students' abilities and qualities, and create a foundation for them to conduct scientific research and integrate internationally. Currently, teachers and students are gradually getting acquainted with the equipment. Regarding some types of machinery such as CNC cutting machines, 3D color printers, software systems, etc., the school is awaiting handover and training on their use.”

Promoting STEM and AI education is also a direction that Thanh Hoa's education sector aims for in the 2025-2026 school year. In Document No. 3153/SGDĐT-GDPT on guiding the implementation of general education tasks in the 2025-2026 school year, sent to the People's Committees of communes and wards, and affiliated general education institutions, the Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training emphasized: Educational institutions need to actively innovate teaching and assessment methods according to the orientation of developing students' qualities and competencies, creating opportunities and conditions for students to develop comprehensively. At the same time, they should promote STEM education, digital skills, artificial intelligence (AI), career guidance and student streaming after lower and upper secondary education; improve the quality of English teaching, and gradually make English a second language in schools.

The Department of Education and Training also emphasized that educational institutions must have decisive and persistent solutions to effectively advise educational management levels, and ensure the allocation and provision of resources for investment in facilities, teaching equipment, learning materials, etc., to meet standards in order to effectively implement the general education program as prescribed.

In the context of a rapidly developing digital economy, the demand for highly skilled personnel in technical fields, automation, information technology, data, etc., is increasing. Therefore, promoting STEM and AI education in schools will be a crucial prerequisite for helping students develop relevant skills early on, preparing a high-quality workforce for the country's new development phase.
