In the 70th minute at St. James' Park, after observing Harvey Barnes moving at high speed on the right wing, Pope launched a powerful throw that was like a long pass, sending the ball precisely to his teammate. Thanks to that, Barnes escaped and finished the ball into the Benfica net, increasing the score to 2-0 for the home team.
After the goal, while some players ran to celebrate with Barnes, a group of players including Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Malik Thiaw and captain Bruno Guimaraes rushed to Nick Pope to congratulate the goalkeeper.
On social media, Newcastle fans praised Pope’s handling as “unbelievable”. Although not known for his passing ability, the English goalkeeper made his mark with a long throw that showed his keen observation.
One user commented: “What a crazy throw!” Another wrote: “Pope’s assist was like a perfect Andrea Pirlo pass.” Another fan commented: “Newcastle’s new weapon.”
After the match, Barnes shared on TNT Sports : “It all happened so quickly. Pope made a great pass, and I just used my instinct to finish. It was a classy assist from Pope."
This victory also marked the first time in 23 years that Newcastle won two consecutive Champions League matches, thereby temporarily rising to 7th place in the rankings.
