Minimum age to drive a car
Article 60 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law stipulates the age of drivers as follows:
- People aged 16 years or older are allowed to drive motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of less than 50 cm3;
- People aged 18 years or older are allowed to drive two-wheeled motorbikes, three-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of 50 cm3 or more and vehicles with similar structures; trucks, tractors with a load capacity of less than 3,500 kg; passenger cars with up to 9 seats;
- People aged 21 years or older are allowed to drive trucks and tractors with a load capacity of 3,500 kg or more; drive class B2 vehicles pulling trailers (FB2);
- People aged 24 years or older are allowed to drive passenger cars with 10 to 30 seats; drive class C vehicles pulling trailers and semi-trailers (FC);
- People aged 27 years or older are allowed to drive passenger cars with more than 30 seats, and drive class D vehicles pulling trailers (FD);
- The maximum age for drivers of passenger cars with more than 30 seats is 50 years old for women and 55 years old for men.
In addition, candidates must meet health requirements. Accordingly, drivers must have health appropriate to the type of vehicle they drive and its function.
Regulations on health standards for drivers will be issued by the Minister of Health in coordination with the Minister of Transport . In addition, periodic health examinations for car drivers and regulations on medical facilities for health examinations of drivers will also be regulated by competent authorities.
In addition, Article 7 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT specifically stipulates the conditions for driving learners as follows:
- Are Vietnamese citizens, foreigners permitted to reside or are working or studying in Vietnam.
- Be of age (as of the date of the driving test), in good health, and have the required educational level; for those studying to upgrade their driving license, they can study in advance but can only take the test when they are of age as prescribed.
- Students who want to upgrade their driving license must have enough driving time or practice and safe driving kilometers as follows:
Class B1 automatic to B1: driving time from 01 year or more and 12,000 km of safe driving or more;
Class B1 to B2: driving time from 01 year or more and 12,000 km of safe driving or more;
Class B2 to C, C to D, D to E; Classes B2, C, D, E to F respectively; Classes D, E to FC: working time from 03 years or more and 50,000 km of safe driving or more;
Class B2 to D, C to E: working time from 05 years or more and 100,000 km of safe driving or more.
- Students who want to upgrade their driver's license to classes D or E must have a junior high school diploma or equivalent.
Maximum age to drive a car
Currently, the Vietnam Road Traffic Law does not have a specific maximum age limit for driving a car. However, there is a limit for each class of driver's license.
Specifically, Article 17 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT stipulates that the validity period of a driving license is:
- Driving licenses of class A1, A2, A3 have no expiration date.
- For class B1 driving license: Valid for women up to 55 years old and men up to 60 years old. For female drivers over 45 years old and men over 55 years old, the driving license is valid for 10 years from the date of issue.
- The validity period for A4 and B2 driving licenses is 10 years from the date of issue.
- The validity period for driving licenses of classes C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, FE is 5 years from the date of issue.
The validity period of a driving license is stated on the driving license (supplemented by Clause 3, Article 2 of Circular 01/2021/TT-BGTVT).
Thus, the elderly and retired people are still allowed to drive cars if they meet health conditions and the validity of their driving license.
