Farmer couple Thach Hung sow rice.
With the thought of becoming quite rich, he had to change his way of doing business, could not monoculture rice forever, had to develop a combination of diverse types of agricultural production to bring high economic efficiency to the family. From then on, he and his wife worked hard, diligently, saved and accumulated capital to invest in expanding production. Along with that, he was supported by the locality with a loan of 25 million VND from the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank to invest in buying 02 breeding cows.
Besides, he actively researched and learned, applied techniques to production, participated in training courses on cultivation and animal husbandry techniques to equip himself with more knowledge, thereby helping him have a new perspective and approach in rice cultivation and he boldly increased production from 1 crop to 3 crops/year.
During the production process, depending on weather and soil conditions, appropriate farming methods are applied to increase productivity and increase family income. When he has accumulated capital, he invests in buying more cows to increase his herd or buys more land for cultivation and makes the most of the labor of family members, both earning a profit and saving on labor costs. In his spare time, he also works for hire such as spraying rice, weeding, and working on the fields for neighboring farmers to increase his income to cover his family's living expenses.
Although Mr. Hung currently owns more than 1.2 hectares of rice land, he does not stop there, he continues to cultivate 03 rice crops/year on an area of 0.9 hectares and boldly converts 0.3 hectares of ineffective rice land to intensive cultivation of other crops, bringing high economic efficiency. In the recent summer-autumn rice crop, he mobilized family members to work together, in addition to hiring mechanical plowing, all the remaining stages such as soil treatment, weeding, bundling, rice planting, and spraying all take advantage of labor and profit, and thanks to a good harvest and good price, the average profit reached 30 million VND/ha. Currently, he has planted the autumn-winter rice crop and continues to utilize his own labor to take care of the rice to reduce production costs.
Mr. Hung said: If you hire out everything in farming, you will not get high profits. As a farmer who works all year round, you must know what to plant and what to raise to suit the local conditions. More importantly, you must regularly update news about prices, learn from experience, and equip yourself with knowledge and techniques for planting and raising animals that are properly applied to bring about economic efficiency. For the 0.3ha of land converted to growing vegetables, he mainly grows bitter melon, chili peppers, and yardlong beans in a rotation of 3 crops per year, with an average profit of 10 million VND/0.1ha. There are years when chili peppers are grown in favorable seasons and prices, and the profit increases to 20 million VND/0.1ha. Currently, his family's 0.2ha of bitter melon and yardlong beans are being harvested, with an average of 80 - 120kg/day, with a selling price ranging from 6,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.
Along with taking care of rice and other crops, he planted 0.1 ha of squash which is growing well and is ready for harvest. For Mr. Hung, growing crops in rotation not only increases income but also improves the land by rotating many times a year to limit the situation of "getting used to the land". For the herd of cattle, the price of cattle was previously stable and always high, so every time a cow gave birth, a cow with good shape was raised to restore the herd, and a cow with poor shape was fattened and sold, an average of 3-4 cows/year.
In the past two years, the price of cattle has fluctuated constantly, the source of straw has not been proactive in time, the price of straw on the market has increased, so he has sold some to reduce the cost of care and maintenance, currently there are about 03 cows. Thanks to diligence and hard work, his family has become well-off, stabilizing their lives with a total income from farming and raising livestock of 150 million VND/year.
According to Mr. Hung, if you are determined, learn more knowledge, and are willing to innovate your way of doing things to adapt to the new situation, you will overcome difficulties and become rich. Although his family has become well-off, he and his wife still live simply, get along with everyone, actively participate in activities and movements launched by the industry and unions, and enthusiastically share experiences as well as guide how to cultivate rice and grow vegetables so that everyone can learn and grow.
