The new name is very strange!
In the past few days, local public opinion has been stirred up by the news that Dien Khanh District will change the name of Dien Khanh Town to Phu Thanh Ward after this locality is upgraded to ward level (district to town, town to ward). The reason is that the name Phu Thanh has almost no connection, sounds very strange, while the name Dien Khanh has been associated with the history, life, and culture of local people for many generations.
Dien Khanh Town seen from above
Specifically, in the conclusion announcement of the Chairman of Dien Khanh District People's Committee at the meeting on March 25, the name of Dien Khanh Town when it becomes a ward was agreed to be Phu Thanh Ward. At the same time, the new names of the two communes, Dien Dong and Dien Xuan, after the merger were Dong Xuan Commune.
After the Department of Internal Affairs supplements some comments from the meeting participants, it will complete and advise the District People's Committee to submit to the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee for consideration of the above names.
Sharing this, Mr. Thang, a resident of Khanh Hoa and a researcher on Dien Khanh citadel, said that the new name of Phu Thanh Ward is really unnecessary and this name is also not suitable, quite out of place with the common name of the district.
Expressing his opinion, Mr. Thang said, "The district name is Dien Khanh, if it is changed, it should have the word "Dien" in front as other localities have been doing for a long time. But in my opinion, it is best to keep the old name because it is closely associated with the history and culture of the local people. Changing the name now sounds very strange and unpleasant."
Currently, the names of the districts' localities all have the word "Dien" in front, such as Dien An, Dien Lac, Dien Lam, Dien Toan... "Or in other localities like Van Ninh, the communes of the district all have the word "Van"; Ninh Hoa town is the same, the communes and wards all have the word "Ninh" in front... Saying this shows that the name Phu Thanh is very inappropriate", Mr. Thang said.
Dien Khanh Citadel is located in Dien Khanh Town.
The district has just proposed
Meanwhile, Ms. Vy (residing in Dien Khanh town) asked, what is the impact of keeping the name Dien Khanh and why do you want to change it? The ancient citadel - Dien Khanh town is a dear, attached and very familiar name to local people as well as friends and tourists everywhere.
"If Dien Khanh is changed to Phu Thanh, no one will remember or recognize this land anymore, and many things will have to be changed, from addresses, documents, house names, street names, which is very costly and complicated. I see that in many other places, the names of towns, cities, and towns are the same as the names of the provinces, so I think changing the name of Dien Khanh Town is very unreasonable and inconvenient," Ms. Vy shared.
Speaking with Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen Van Gam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Khanh District (Khanh Hoa), only said that the renaming of Dien Khanh Town to Phu Thanh after becoming a ward was only a proposal, the district was still discussing and had to go through many more steps before making a final decision. The reporter also asked other questions about this renaming but received no response.
The proposal to rename Dien Khanh Town is still controversial and the district has not yet explained why it chose the new name Phu Thanh. In the conclusion document of the Chairman of Dien Khanh District People's Committee, there was no reason for this renaming. However, it is thought that renaming a locality must first have the consensus and support of the people living there, only then will it be complete.
Dien Khanh Town was established on September 30, 1981 on the basis of the entire area and population of Dien Thuy Commune and part of the area and population of Dien Toan, Dien Thanh, Dien An, Dien Son and Dien Dien Communes.
Dien Khanh district was formerly the land of Dien Ninh district under Thai Khang palace. In 1742, Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat changed Dien Ninh district to Dien Khanh district.
In 1832, Binh Hoa town was changed to Khanh Hoa province, including 2 prefectures and 4 districts, including Dien Khanh prefecture.
In 1793, after capturing Dien Khanh from the Tay Son dynasty, Lord Nguyen Anh built a military base and residential area on the then remote land, surrounded by a citadel.
Dien Khanh Citadel is about 36,000 m² wide, with 4 gates still remaining; it was recognized as a national historical site in 1988.
