NO GOAL COMES FROM BALL CONTROL
Of the total 7 goals of the Vietnamese team, there was 1 goal from the 11m mark in the match against Hong Kong, 1 goal by Tuan Hai from the high pressing style and quick transition in the match against Syria. The remaining goals in the matches against Palestine and the Philippines all came from long passes into the gaps in the opponent's defense. None of the goals came from Coach Troussier's favorite style: proactively controlling the ball, pressuring the opponent with short, smooth combinations and creating opportunities. We scored mainly from the players' ability, the observation ability and good passing technique of individuals like Hoang Duc, Duy Manh, Thai Son... along with the ability to move intelligently, the starting speed and reasonable movement timing of Cong Phuong, Van Toan, Tuan Hai or the confident solo of Dinh Bac.
Tuan Hai (right)
Tuan Hai (left) is expected to score at the 2023 Asian Cup.
But perhaps in a high-level playground like the 2023 Asian Cup with opponents like Japan or Iraq, the Vietnamese team will certainly not have the ball to control. In the most recent match against the Iraqi team in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, we only had 1 shot but it was not on target; we even only got the ball into the opponent's penalty area 3 times. In the match against Korea (a team that is considered to be of equal quality to Japan - the opponent of the Vietnamese team in the Asian Cup), Tuan Hai and his teammates also only had 1 shot on target and of course could not convert it into a goal. The strikers also only got the ball past the opponent's 16.50m line 7 times.
ALL HOPE IS ON Tuan Hai's SHOULDERS
Tuan Hai is currently the best striker of the Vietnamese team under coach Troussier. He started in 6 matches and scored 2 goals. One was a surprising long-range shot in the match against Syria and the other was a close-range tap-in after a pass from Van Toan in the match against Palestine. Both goals showed that the Hanoi FC striker has brought into play his strengths: decisiveness, boldness in his shots and physical strength, agility, and speed in his movements.
At the club level, Tuan Hai is also the best player of the capital team in the AFC Champions League with 4 goals and 1 assist against the big teams of the continent such as Urawa Reds, Three Towns or Pohang Steelers. Tuan Hai plays independently, confidently, aggressively and effectively against the top defenders of Korea, Japan or quality foreign players from Asian clubs. The striker from Ha Nam is entering the prime of his career. His sweeping runs and individual ball handling ability are gradually being perfected with smooth, skillful ball control movements and increasingly sharp finishing skills. Tuan Hai also maintains his strengths of being bold in finishing decisions (a goal from a distance of more than 50 meters against Binh Duong team in V-League 2023 - 2024 is an example) and also his accurate aerial positioning. The important thing at the Asian Cup is where coach Troussier will put Tuan Hai in his 3-4-3 formation and who will support and pass the ball to Hai when his opponents are stars playing in Europe.
Van Toan is also expected.
Of course, besides Tuan Hai, there are still Van Toan, Van Tung and Dinh Bac. But perhaps the striker of Hanoi Club is still the most expected name. Of course, Hai alone cannot carry the attack of the Vietnamese team in the context of losing Tien Linh and Hoang Duc. Whether we can score or not depends a lot on the calculations of the French coach. For example, how to attack, how to create opportunities for Tuan Hai or practice sharp set pieces. Coach Philippe once shared: "The Vietnamese team is still improving every day", hoping that improvement will also come to the attack and the result will be goals.
